Independent Canadian Pop/Rock Artist Zameer Is All Set To Release His New Album- Shut The World Out
We meet up again with the successful independent Canadian artist, Zameer who was honored with the 'Most Promising Musical Artist' back in 2009 at ANOKHI's 6th anniversary event. Since then he has sold over 30,000 albums in Canada and lent his WIn or Defeat track as the theme song to 2010 Vancouver Paralympics games. For those of you who don't know, Zameer's style of music is unique, soulful and personal. With local success down, Zameer is now venturing into the US with his smooth rock style.
The new album has been slated as his best work yet, boasting 10 original songs written by Zameer himself and produced by 12-time Juno award winner and producer Grammy nominee Gavin Brown. The songs feature Canadian Rock legend Johnny Fay of The Tragically Hip. The new album also includes songs that have been collaborated with Canadian dance artist Mia Martini and Pakistani Rock pioneers, Noori.
We got in touch with Zameer to learn more about his new album and his life to date.
ANOKHI Media: What inspired you to become a musician?
Zameer: Nothing inspired me to become a musician. Music inspired me to be a better human.
Freedom of expression is an innate human need. All of us need it fundamentally, whether it is through writing journals, chatting with friends or posting pictures on Facebook. I was fortunate to have discovered music as my preferred mode of expression at the age of seven.
Music helped me evolve emotionally and intellectually. It allowed me to communicate fearlessly, succinctly and effectively. Music has raised me as much as my parents and older siblings have. Which is why I am so naturally drawn to it. Aspiring to become a musician would be a disservice to music. I'm simply being the best human I can, and music teaches me how to do that.
AM: Tell us something about your new album?
Z: I personally have grown a lot, since my last album. And I'm sure that'll show in this new album. The last three years of my life have been eye- opening than most other three year periods thus far. I've come into myself more, and am more comfortable in my skin. I've learned to respect myself and my surroundings more, and have found love.
Most of the songs on the new album are about love whether it is with an acquaintance, a lover, a friend, a stranger, an emotion, a pet or a city. The common thread through it all is love. Love is the most powerful and inspiring feeling in the universe, so I do hope it inspires listeners.
AM: You have always helped raise money for some of the prominent charitable institutes globally. Talk to us about it?
Z: Sing For South Asia was a charity event aimed at raising awareness and funds for Kashmiri earthquake victims back in 2007. Since then I've partnered up with the Canadian Paralympic Committee. A portion of all revenue from my song "Win or Defeat" goes out to help athletes with disabilities. I also did and will continue to do a series of free concerts at charitable events for those afflicted with disabilities.
I will continue to help in any way I can to assist in making the world a better place.
AM: How has the journey been so far. What challenges did you face?
Z: There have been many challenges. The state of the music industry is pretty ridiculous now. Anyone trying to commercialize their music in this decade is bound to face many challenges. Musicians need to diversify a fair bit in order to put food on the table and have stable lives. And as part of that diversification, it’s easy to lose yourself, and lose perspective on why you pursued the art in the first place.
I love challenges. I believe that in every challenge there is opportunity. The greater the challenge, and therefore, the greater the opportunity. There have been several challenges in my journey thus far, and just as many opportunities. If not more.
The album is now available on ITunes. Catch a peek below!
