Take a break from the World Cup by getting primed for Wimbledon.
Wimbledon has been held at the famous All England Club since 1877, making it the oldest tennis tournament in the world. What sets this competition apart from the French or US Open is that it honours that its lawn tennis roots by having players fight it out on grass.
Grass isn’t for everyone, as several players from Andy Murray to Rafael Nadal have voiced their concerns about the slippery surface. “Grass is always a little bit harder for me after injury. I played Wimbledon in 2012 with my knee injury and I never played another match after. Last year I tried but I was not ready enough to compete. Let's see how are my feelings this year," Nadal said to the AFP after his loss at Wimbledon in 2013.

While the point system can tend to get a bit confusing in tennis, Wimbledon doesn’t have the complicated group stages or many matches like the World Cup, making it a simpler competition to follow. The championship contains five junior events, five invitation events and five main events.

Key Players To Watch
Maria Sharapova will be looking for her second Wimbledon victory/Wimbledon
This year’s Wimbledon will likely become a redemption song for the big guns of the tennis world – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova, who are looking to repeat earlier wins. Federer has been training hard to edge out his rivals – Novak Djokovic, Nadal and Murray. He says that he’s in great condition to win.
“This year I feel all the options are there. Return, serve, serve and volley, come in, my backhand – everything is working to my liking. For that reason, I feel I'm a bit more relaxed mentally because I know it is there,” Federer said at his Wimbledon press conference.
Last year’s Wimbledon was a game changer for Andy Murray’s career, as he finally beat a tough Djokovic to win the championship. This year, Murray has recruited Amelie Mauresmo as his coach, after letting go of his mentor Ivan Lendl, who had been instrumental in changing up Murray’s style. The new pairing dubbed “Murresmo” has raised eyebrows since Murray is hoping to clinch a hat-trick this year.
It’ll be an interesting competition for rivals Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams who are likely to face each other in the quarterfinals. It will be 10 years since a 17-year-old Sharapova took the title from Williams in a tight match in 2004.
Williams had a hard time with the French Open, where she lost in the second round to newbie Garbine Muguruza.
If the two women do meet in the quarterfinals, it would be a victory for either to win over their critics and boost their world standing.
Day 1,2,3 Updates
DAY 1- Roger Fedrerer crushed Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 33 minutes to clock up his 68th victory, including seven titles, in what is his 16th consecutive appearance at The Championships.
Reigning Roland Garros champion Maria Sharapova advanced to the second round of Wimbledon with a no-nonsense win over Britain’s Samantha Murray in a whisker under an hour.
Day 2- Rafael Nadal snapped a two-match losing streak at Wimbledon on Tuesday with an opening-round win while Jelena Jankovic became the highest seed of the tournament to fall. More on Day 2.
Serena Williams, five-time Wimbledon champion averaged more than two aces per service game in her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Anna Tatishvili on Centre Court.

DAY 3- Andy Murray celebrated after his First round victory on Centre Court.
Despite at first seeming taken aback by Kurumi Nara's meticulous play, Venus Williams gathered her strength to stride confidently through to the third round.
Overall Wimbledon looks to be a crucial competition for the world’s best players who’ve slipped in the past year. It also means that new players like Canada’s Milos Raonic may forge ahead and beat the odds.
