Held at the newly renovated The Everleigh in trendy Toronto neighborhood King West, Justin Timberlake’s women’s and menswear label William Rast hosted a two-hour fall/winter 2013 media presentation by Brill Communications on May 29th. Sponsored by Jack Daniels, William Rast’s preview featured street worthy denim, sweaters with a hint of sparkle, colour-blocked tops, graphic tees and leather jackets. Skulls, mixed fabrics and off-beat detailing kept the collection from being a stalemate, run-of-the-mill street label. In an effort to broaden their horizons and their fan base, the label is teaming up with plus size store Addition Elle to present a collection that caters to a fuller figure. It’s not the first time William Rast has collaborated with a company, having created a limited line for Target in 2011.

Launched in 2005 by Timberlake and his friend Trace Ayala, the label takes its name from the designers’ grandfathers, Timberlake’s grandfather ‘William’, and Ayala’s grandfather’s surname ‘Rast’. The William Rast label produces an array of rugged, street style clothing; denim and leather jackets, jeans, graphic t-shirts, eyewear, footwear and sweaters with moderate pricing in the range of $75 – $300. In years past, William Rast has featured at New York Fashion Week, but as of late, the ready to wear label has been relegated to the racks of floundering department store J.C. Penny. And if recent buzzing is to be believed, Justin Timberlake is parting ways with his debut label; his rep cryptically stating that Timberlake will ‘eternally’ be connected to Rast in response to reports that the singer is jumping ship. Timberlake’s partner Trace Ayala has yet to respond to the rumors that are swirling around the label.

Guests were treated to specialty cocktails from Jack Daniels along with tall boy Jack-and-Coke cans and a variety of other spirits. William Rast clad wait staff sporting shirts that professed their love of the brand circulated the club serving everything from boxes filled with French fries and coleslaw to spicy dough Hush Puppies and sliders. DJ Randi Bergman kept the party pumping with a fitting mix of Justin Timberlake and the latest and greatest top 40. Brill couldn’t have found a more fitting location for the launch than the The Everleigh. A rustic homage to all things Canadian, the space is filled with quirky details and comfy couches. Loonies and Pennies are shellacked into the bar, a flock of—what appear to be seagulls but on further reflection are assuredly geese—floats just below the ceiling while an overturned canoe serves as the bathroom sink.

As a parting gift, guests were treated to a black bag filled with a mini bottle of Jack Daniels, a graphic t-shirt ranging from a basic gray top with the words “I Love William Rast” to a cute, pink shirt with emblazoned with a silk-screened lace skull, and a copy of Justin Timberlake’s latest album, The 20/20 Experience—on point, but it’s been so long since I’ve actually seen a music CD, I don’t know what to do with it?
