With Multiculturalism Seen As A Blessing, Individuals Focus On Celebrating The Differences

This is exactly the spirit behind the DiwaliFest. Diwali is a Hindu festival and it’s the most recognizable South Asian festival in the world. By creating this signature event, fittingly in the City of Brampton, the festival hopes to pay tribute to the large South Asian community. Equally important, this provides an opportunity for members of other ethnic backgrounds to learn about Diwali and the South Asian culture.

Bramalea City Centre, Canada’s 7^th largest indoor shopping mall, is the ideal host venue to accommodate an expected attendance of 150,000 over the three days. The Canada Dry DiwaliFest is truly at the right place at the right time.

A true community celebration

While the festival has a Diwali theme, the event itself exemplifies the meaning of community. Many organizations and dignitaries have lent their support. The key reason for their participation is because they see the value and the quality of this event.

The participants include: Consul General of India Akhilesh Mishra, Minster of State (Sport) Bal Gosal, MP Parm Gill, Brampton’s mayor and council members.

Organizations from the South Asian community: Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce and Gerrard India Bazaar BIA in Toronto, other participating organizations include Knights Table, Wellspring Chinguacoucy, Chinese Business Association and Mississauga Chinese Business Association.

A community offering

Traditionally on the fourth day of Diwali – Padwa – is observed with Annakoot, meaning mountain of food. 56 types of food is cooked for the bhog (the offering of food) to Lord Krishna.

DiwaliFest urges visitors to bring non-perishable food items for its food mountain. All the collected items will be donated to Knights Table, one of the busiest agencies in Peel Region.

For over 20 years the Knights Table has served the needs of people dealing with issues of poverty and homelessness in the Peel Region by providing food bank, hot meals and other services. Knights Table rely on community support to keep its doors open. Its impact on the community is significant. Knight Table serves over 56,000 visits to its different programs and services annually.
