Carbohydrates: a crucial part of your diet.
Nowadays, there are many popular fad diet plans on the market: vegan, gluten-free, Paleo, and the list continues. We are here to show you that there are many reasons why carbohydrates should not be removed from your diet, as carbs play a key role in creating a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle.
Carbs Are An Important Part Of A Healthy Diet
According to the Nutrition Source from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), carbohydrates are rich in glucose, which in turn becomes a lasting source of energy for the body. HSPH’s Healthy Eating Plate – a site created by Harvard nutritional experts– recommends that your dinner should consist mostly of healthy carbohydrates, vegetables (minus the potatoes), and a one-fourth plate of whole grains.
Carbs Can Make You Feel Happy
If you are feeling down, or the mood doesn’t seem right, Eating Well cites in a study that carbs produce serotonin- the chemical our bodies produce when we feel good! In a study found in The Archives of Internal Medicine, it is said that people who consume a low-carbohydrate diet (20-40 grams of carbs) are more susceptible to anger and anxiety than those who follow the diet mentioned above.
Diet Fads That Promote Low-Carb Diets Are Not Recommended
The Atkins, Dukan, and South Beach Diet have given carbs a bad rep. Dietitian Sian Porter tells National Health Service UK that, "Carbohydrates are such a broad category and people need to know that not all carbs are bad. While we should reduce the amount of sugar in our diet there is strong evidence that starch and fibre are good for our health.”
Carbs Helps You Maintain a Figure
By consuming carbs on a regular and daily basis, you will realize that you have lesser cravings in the middle of the night, and aren’t hunting for that tub of ice cream lying somewhere in the freezer. According to One Medical, foods that are rich in resistant starch trigger the release of hormones into the intestine, which will make you feel full. Furthermore, carbs play an important role in maintaining your blood sugar level, as it is the same insulin that sends signals to the brains to store fat, says Eating Well. So, eating oatmeal or other bran cereals, even whole-wheat toast, will keep you from gaining those extra pounds!
Eating Carbs Prevents Risk from Diseases
The National Health Service in UK has recommended, too, that for a healthy diet, vegetables, pulses, whole grains, and starchy foods like potatoes (with their skin) should be consumed on a daily basis because these foods promote good bowel health, reducing the risk of constipation. Truly stated, most of the diseases that we experience on a day-to-day basis are a result of our lifestyle and food consumption. By incorporating carbohydrates into our diet, on a regular basis, we can prevent diseases like diabetes, obesity, and various types of cancers. ?
