Set in the glamorous hills of Wellesley, Massachusetts, Suzy Duffy's fast-paced novella came as a surprisingly enthralling read. Be forewarned: If you pick it up on a Saturday morning, prepare to spend the entire day engrossed in the Wellesley Wives' lives of Popsy and Sandra. Pleasingly, Wives is an unexpected deviation from the usual chick-lit drivel I-begrudgingly-read when there's nothing else to hand. Instead of finding myself rolling my eyes while turning the page of yet another cookie-cutter 'girl meets boy, they fall in love, something happens to break them up but just before the end they realize that their love is stronger than whatever their issues,' type of book, Wives is a story that I could relate to.
A novel that's very 'now', Duffy doesn't shie away from taboo issues-economic downturn, death, affairs, swingers, May-December romances-but eloquently puts them on display, examines them and their consequences in a very real way. Like a fine artisan, Duffy carefully weaves a well-written story that has you laughing along with the characters, wincing at uncomfortable moments and feeling empathetic when things go from bad to worse. Extracting emotion from the reader while simultaneously keeping the story interesting, light hearted and easy to read? That's talent. Don't judge the book by the cover; Wellesley Wives may look like your typical bargain bin, lame romantic saga from the outside, but it couldn't be anything further from that on the inside.
Living the perfect lives of Stepford wives in the suburbia of Wellesley, Popsy and Sandra's days are filled with charity lunches, shopping dates, manicures and beauty appointments. With ambitious husbands who run a high-profile, multi-million dollar corporation, Popsy and Sandra's biggest lot in life is coordinating dinner parties.
A mother of two and grandmother of one with a doting husband, Peter, perky Popsy is content. With her eldest daughter happily married and her youngest daughter just promoted at her finance firm job, they look like the perfect family. But appearances can be deceiving. Sandra is the second wife of Peter's business partner Jack. Keeping her body in tip-top shape, She was happy to give up having children when she married Jack, but as 50 fast approaches, Sandra suddenly finds herself yearning for the pitter patter of little feet.
Suzy Duffy studied French and Spanish in Dublin, Ireland before falling into the field of broadcasting. Working at Ireland's national radio and television network, RTE, Duffy took a hiatus after getting hitched to spend time with her children. Not content to be a stay at home mom, Duffy toyed with the idea of writing a book.
Taking the opportunity to write during the evenings when her children wee asleep, Duffy churned out four books and made it to No. 1 in the Irish Best Sellers list. After 5 kids, Duffy took a break and moved to America in 2009. Duffy's Irish books are set to be re-released alongside her latest works of fiction Wellesley Wives with Newton Neighbors, Natick Nannies, Waterford Lass, Wicklow Women and Galway Girls to be released sequentially early next year through until 2015.
