In Search of the Next Dancing Superstars
Created to showcase talent in South Asian dances such as bhangra, Bollywood and fusion, Naach Meri Jaan aims to showcase the most talented children, men and women dancers — whether in group form or solo acts. A pioneer in bringing the Indian reality dance platform to North America as a competition, NMJ is set to take place in over 12 cities in North America, broadcasted by Star Plus. Three of India’s most renowned judges — Javed Jaffrey, Ravi Behl and Naved Jaffrey — have teamed up with Pria Haider and Sparks to help make this the biggest dance competition to date.
This weekend’s stop was Toronto, where Medha Wadhwa, Sanskriti Arts Junior Ensemble, Harvi Karathe and Jenine Paulose, Mihrin Popatia and the Ambitious Movement won the Toronto title of Warraich Grill Naach Meri Jaan. The finals had over 28 contestants participating in four different categories at the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts. They were judged by the renowned Javed Jaffrey, Rujuta Vaidya and Devendra Pal Singh.
Presented by Glitterati Entertainment and Sanskriti Arts, contestants were judged in five different categories — Kids Solo, Kids Group, Duet, Adult Solo and Adult Group. Winners were presented with hand-sculpted awards from Art by Misbah, summer camp sessions with Sanskriti Arts and recreational and educational scholarships from Stand Up and Speak, Spirit of Math and Write on Q and piano classes by Anie Piano — not forgetting the incredible swag gift hampers that included products from designer Dinesh Ramsay, Adaa Artistry and Shoppers Drug Mart. The Toronto winners will go on to represent Toronto at the San Jose Grand Finale. The San Jose Grand Finale winner, selected from thousands of contestants in Toronto and 11 cities in the USA, will win a spot in a Bollywood movie and score a portfolio from a renowned Bollywood photographer.
Celebrity judge Javed Jaffrey said, “What we looked for in a solo performance was the use of song, choice of song, body movement and finish. For group performances, we obviously looked for synchronization, ideas, formation, et cetera.”
Puja Amin of Glitterati Entertainment and Sanskriti Arts said, “I am really excited about San Jose Grand Finale. Toronto witnessed an unparalleled dancing flair in the finals with so many incredible performances. We have so many gifted young kids and individuals in this city, that the judges had a tough time selecting the winner. I am confident the winner of the Grand Finale of Naach Meri Jaan in San Jose will be a Canadian.”
“Dance is a means not only to showcase artistic talent, but also to develop self-confidence and enhance awareness about health, fitness and musical sensibilities. The main motivation behind this competition was to create a platform and bring together the best of contemporary, fusion and classical Indian culture for the entire family,” says Amin.
