Two great lines showcased at Toronto's World MasterCard Fashion Week

Sunny Fong wins World MasterCard Fashion Week. Although, I admit to being a little biased: in my eyes, Fong can do no wrong. Known for featuring models of different shapes, sizes and ages in his shows, Fong failed to disappoint. Sending out a variety of models, the short-in-stature designer again shows that it's not just a certain set of women who can rock his designs.

VAWK and VAWKKIN had me on the edge of my seat for several reasons, the first being the impeccable designs and tailoring. The second? Moments before the show started the coordinating team began to feverishly buff the runway. Buffed runway plus brand new, smooth-bottomed high heels equals a recipe for disaster. Luckily, despite several slip-ups, none of the women went down as SS '13 runway road-kill.

First up was Fong's relatively new, office-friendly, day-to-day line VAWKKIN. Sticking to the same simple black and white colour palette that's been a staple this season, Fong also spearheaded the popular peplum and colour-blocked side panel trend. Inventive seaming strayed from the typical lines, incorporating godet, side-pleat and panel detailing. A cute and clever double-button closure below a diamond-shaped cut out on the bottom back of jackets and shirts lent the line a dressy, tuxedo type of feel. Bright white skirts, trousers and shorts had a thick black side panel that ran the length of the garment-a fun, silhouette-slimming deviation from the standard pants, shirts and shorts fare.

VAWK-Fong's less toned-down line- upped the ante. A mix of eggplant, bright red, black and cream coloured clothes and sexy silhouettes, the line was a loose and not-so-loose nod to Madonna. An overt reference to the queen of pop came in the form of a metal cone bra paired with purple pants. Off the shoulder dresses, thigh-high skirt slits and geometric back cut outs made for a sleek line of provocative clothes that will have any daring material girl clambering to purchase.
