Investigators are trying to identify whether a 2-metre piece of plane wreckage discovered on Reunion Island, thousands of miles away from the Indian Ocean, is part of Flight MH370, which disappeared mysteriously in March 2014.
It was just 18 months ago when Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 vanished without a trace, leaving experts and theorists puzzled as to how and where the plane could have disappeared to without any wreckage to be found. The discovery of plane wreckage on Reunion Island a few days ago offers hope of an answer to what happened to flight MH370 and its 239 passengers.
Flight MH370, a Boeing 777, was travelling to Bejing when it mysteriously vanished on March 8, 2014. No wreckage has been recovered up to this point despite multiple exhaustive international efforts, which included a thorough search of the Indian Ocean's surface and floor. Many political and cultural theorists have thrown around speculations and beliefs as to what could have happened to the plane.
Some popular theories include the following.
-
The plane could have been hijacked from terrorists and taken to a secret location, out of sight and out of mind, and the passengers may be held hostage.
-
The plane could have been blown up in mid-air by a missile, leaving no wreckage at all … anywhere!
-
The plane could have crashed into the water, but the volatile tides of the Indian Ocean could have caused the wreckage to sink into the ocean before it could be discovered, and the debris could have washed away into different areas.

A Boeing investigator has identified the mystery object as a flaperon belonging to a Boeing 777 wing, a U.S. official told Reuters. Other than flight MH370, no other Boeing 777s are known to be missing at this time — which is why this piece of wreckage is being investigated thoroughly before experts draw any conclusions.
"The bigger the piece, the more chances are that you can identify where it came from," says Hillel Glazer, the founder and CEO of Entinex, a management consulting firm in the aerospace field.

Chinese families who lost loved ones in the mysterious disappearance have confirmed to many news outlets that they received text messages from Malaysian Airlines letting them know that a meeting will be held on August 7, 2015. The meeting will take place by the international airport in Beijing. The topic of the meeting has not been confirmed, but attendees will most likely discuss the findings that are being linked to the crash of Flight MH370. Families are skeptical at this point.
