Top Ten Bollywood Movies Inspired By Hollywood
Bollywood often gets flak for copying Hollywood movies. Let's say Bollywood takes inspiration from Hollywood movies and puts its own twist on them!
Here’s a list of the top ten popular movies inspired by Hollywood — but with a Bollywood twist.
1. Chori Chori (1956)

The chemistry between Raj Kapoor and Nargis is legendary in Bollywood. Chori Chori is not only a famous movie of its time — it also keeps winning people’s hearts today. The movie is an adaptation of Hollywood’s It Happened One Night (1934). Unlike its Hollywood counterpart, Chori Chori is full of Indian values, humour, twists and emotional drama.

2. Sholay (1975)

This blockbuster — one of the longest-running movies on Indian cinema — has lived on in people's hearts since its opening night. The friendship between Jai and Veeru is exemplary, and people try to live up to this friendship even today. Although this is an action-adventure film with the Bollywood masala of romance and heartbreak, it draws inspiration from Hollywood’s western film The Magnificent Seven (1960).

3. Agneepath (1990)

Agneepath, another all-time favourite of Indian cinema, drew its inspiration from the Hollywood crime drama Scarface (1983). Agneepath takes you on the journey of a young man who wants justice for his family as he seeks to avenge his father’s death. Unlike the hero in Scarface, Agneepath's hero becomes a gangster with a mission to seek justice for the wrong done to his family. This movie is an action-packed, emotional family drama.

4. Baazigar (1993)

This blockbuster — starring one of India’s best and most sizzling onscreen couples, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol — is an adaptation of A Kiss Before Dying (1991). But unlike its Hollywood inspiration, Baazigar is yet another movie about a young man getting justice for his family after his father’s death. Baazigar is the perfect blend of romance, love, revenge and suspense.

5. Mohabbatein (2000)

This beautifully romantic musical drama was the highest-grossing film of 2000. Mohabbatein has touched many viewers with its love story between Raj Aryan and Megha. The story of Megha’s father, Narayan Shankar, is also a classic part of the film. Raj not only teaches young boys in college to live for love, but he's also able to melt the heart of Narayan Shankar, showing the path to love and the peace that it brings. Hollywood’s Dead Poets Society (1989) is the inspiration for this movie.

6. Koi… Mil Gaya (2003)

This beautiful story about a young man forming an unusual friendship with an alien takes inspiration from Hollywood’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Koi… Mil Gaya is a truly Bollywood take on E.T. This movie has it all — friendship, love, romance, action and drama. In 166 minutes, Koi… Mil Gaya gives you full entertainment dhamal and a slice of whichever genre you enjoy most.

7. Sarkar (2005)

This outstanding father-son duo movie derives its vision from Hollywood’s 1972 classic The Godfather. Sarkar follows the basic plotline of the original movie. However, unlike The Godfather, Sarkar is all about delivering justice. Whereas the Hollywood movie is a family crime film, this Bollywood adaptation is about upholding righteous values and passing them on to the next generation.

8. Life In A… Metro (2007)

One of the highest-grossing movies of its year, this movie was inspired by Hollywood’s comedy-drama The Apartment (1960). The main story in both movies is similar. But Life In A… Metro also weaves in the stories of the characters related to the lead couple. In this Bollywood twist, the story is a full-on drama with heartbreak, betrayal and true love.

9. Dhoom 3 (2013)

The Dhoom series has become an all-time favourite buddy-cop action franchise since its inception in 2004. It's hard to decide whose chemistry is more intriguing in this movie — Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra's or Amir Khan and Katrina Kaif's. This emotional drama with power-packed action sequences is a Bollywood take on the Hollywood movie The Prestige (2006).

10. Bang Bang (2014)

This action-packed romance-drama is an official remake of Hollywood’s action spy romantic comedy Knight and Day (2010), starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. In a Bollywood twist, Hrithik Roshan’s character is an Indian soldier who embarks on a mission to bring down terrorists, save his country and avenge the death of his brother, also a soldier. Unlike Tom Cruise’s character (spoiler alert!), Hrithik’s character reunites with his parents at the end of the movie.
