Most people opt for massage therapy to feel less stressed, more at ease and to help cure body aches and pains.
Angela Padgett, owner of Skin Sense Face and Body Works shares her top tips for making the most of your professional massage session.
Don’t Eat Right Before A Massage
If you eat right before your massage session you’ll feel discomfort as your body will be working overtime to digest the food, leaving you feeling unsettled. Instead, try to eat a few hours beforehand to prevent the discomfort.
Ask About Oils And Lotions
Ask your massage therapist whether she’ll be using oils and lotions, as this will help to reduce the friction on your skin.
Stay Within Your Comfort Level
How much clothing you take off is your choice. If you feel uncomfortable with skin contact around your hips or any other body part don't fret, the therapist can massage through the sheets.
Give Direction
Let your massage therapist know where you need the most attention. It’s better to guide than to be left unsatisfied, as you will know best which areas require more attention. Say how much pressure you’re comfortable with and your preferred speed.
Voice Your Concerns
If you feel any pain or discomfort during the massage, make sure to tell your therapist. If there are any problems or distractions due to the environment, such as the volume of music, the temperature of the room or lighting, let her know.
Stay Hydrated
Be sure to drink lots of water following your treatment as your kidneys receive a workout after your massage. Kneading and working muscles stimulates the waste response in your body. Drinking water provides your kidneys with the water they need to effectively eliminate the waste.
To reap the full benefits of a massage, you’ll probably need to schedule several massage sessions. The therapeutic effects are cumulative, so the more regularly you get treatment, the better you’ll feel and the more quickly your body will respond.
