Social etiquette 101: Rules on texting and talking on your cell phone in public.
Have you ever been out on a date and experience the person you're seeing answer a call, start texting or check an email right in the middle of your one-on-one time?
Yes, it’s totally rude and not surprising that 86 percent of singles polled by the online dating site Zoosk revealed that the worst cell phone-related behaviour during a date is "constantly glancing at a cell phone."
Author and internationally recognized etiquette expert, Jacqueline Whitmore decreed the month of July as National Cell Phone Courtesy Month back in 2002. She created this with the intent of making cell phone users more aware and respectful of their surroundings.
Below outlines her tips for managing your cell phone usage gracefully.
Be All There
Wherever you are, whether it’s a date or hanging out with friends, the person you are with should always take precedence over calls you want to make or receive. No one should ever be more interested in their phones than the people in front of them. People first, technology second.
Excuse Yourself
If you’re expecting an important call that you can't postpone, alert your date ahead of time and excuse yourself when the call comes in. If you do happen to take the call in front of someone, make sure to keep it short and sweet and keep your regular conversational tone when speaking.
Avoid Ridiculous And Loud Ringtones
Never put your phone (or purse, keys, sunglasses or anything you can't eat) on the table. Your phone should be concealed and on silent to be polite.
If you forgot, which is an honest mistake, don’t ignore it and pretend it's someone else's, apologize and silence it immediately.
Ask Permission
If it is really necessary that you need take out your phone while out on a date, always make sure to ask permission first. Say something as simple as, "Do you mind if I take out my phone to make a call quickly?"
If taking pictures on a date, get consent before posting them online to social media sites.
It's Permissible To Pull Out Your Phone On Dates For These Three Reasons:
1. To take a picture of or with your date. (That doesn’t mean posting it to Instagram right away; it can wait!)
2. To show your date a picture of a family baby or pet.
3. To find the answer to a perplexing trivia question that comes up in conversation. If you're out with multiple people, always be sure to include everyone.
Needless to say, no one wants to go out on a date with someone showing more interest in their phone than them. Always be courteous to those around you. That text can wait.
