The thought of travelling solo can be intimidating. For some, simply being alone with yourself can seem lonely and awkward.
Add to that the challenge of navigating an unfamiliar destination, whether it’s domestic or international, and it can all seem daunting.
If you’re one who feels overwhelmed when it comes to taking a journey on your own, ease yourself into it by following these solo travel tips. While simple, they’re sure to help you prepare for a journey that’s uniquely yours.
Plan Ahead
Make an itinerary in advance, so you know the main destinations you want to explore. Doing your research on the Internet is always important, so you won’t get into trouble or be stressed.
Ease into it by travelling to places that are familiar to you, or going on a trip with a tour guide or a volunteer organization to get a feel for foreign soil. It will also help you make friends and gain contacts in the area.
One of the world’s leading travel experts, Jack Ezon, President of New York City-based Ovation Vacations, suggests, “If you're going on vacation to an all-inclusive resort or cruise, look for single supplement discounts. Often times, singles have to pay double to go on a cruise and be alone in a cabin. You see, these companies price their rates based on two people in a room. Some cruise lines like Crystal and Silversea, allow single passengers to stay on board and only pay the regular per-person rate even though they will be alone in their room. In addition, they often have hosts on board to entertain and engage with single travellers, whether over dinner or even on the dance floor."
Be Yourself
Be who you want to be, and do what you want to do. You're in a new country, and with unfamiliar people; be who you are, act the way you want. This is your time to truly find yourself. Do what you want to do, whether that is sit in the park or go out to a bunch of restaurants you’ve been dying to try.
Stay Safe
Be conservative in unfamiliar countries – don’t dress too flashy or carry your phone in your hand, you're not trying to impress anyone anyways. Having your phone out or dressing well may make it look like you have a lot of money, making you a target for pickpockets and thieves.
Be Open
Remember that when you travel alone, it doesn’t mean you will always be alone. You’re likely to make new friends when you’re outside your comfort zone, because there really isn’t another option. Even if you’re an introvert, travelling solo gets you to break out of your shell. By making conversation with locals and other tourists, you learn a lot more about the local culture.
Keep In Touch
Take advantage of social media to keep in contact with your family and friends back home! Go ahead and Instagram all your gorgeous pics, and Facebook and tweet all the crazy things that you are experiencing. Your friends and family will be happy to hear you’re doing well.
