On July 22, Piers Handling, the CEO and Director of TIFF announced the world premiers in the 'Galas and Special Presentations' programs of the 39th Toronto International Festival. The lineup of star-studded films does not disappoint!
World premiers from 37 renowned directors such as Noah Baumbach, Peter Ho-Sun Chan, Susanne Bier, David Dobkin, Mia Hansen-Love, Phillippe Falardeau, Fracois Ozon, Chris Rock, Ning Hao, Christian Petzold, Lone Scherfig and Omung Kumar to name a few. A total of 13 galas and 46 special presentations have been announced for this years film festival.
Piers Handling stated,“Toronto can anticipate another remarkable lineup of films. Cinema’s collective and transformative experience lives at the heart of our Festival-a sentiment that inspires the global dialogue rippling throughout the selections revealed today.”
Cameron Bailey, the Artistic Director of TIFF conveyed his excitement over the diversity at the film festival this year, stating “We can’t wait to present the new films from some of cinema’s brightest talents. This year we’ll welcome filmmakers from France, Germany, China, the UK, the US and more to red carpets in Toronto.”
Quebecois directors Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club) and Philippe Falardeau (Monsieur Lazhar) return to TIFF in September, bringing Wild and The Good Lie (Falardeau’s English-language debut), respectively. Both films star Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon, whose performance in Wild is already generating a lot of buzz.

Opening and Closing Night
In a break from tradition, no opening night film was announced on Tuesday.
The closing night film, A Little Chaos by Alan Rickman has been slated for September 13 at the Roy Thomson Hall. The UK film stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Kate Winslet, Stanley Tucci and Alan Rickman himself.
The Galas
The galas will feature world premiers of films Black and White by Mike Binder, The Equalizer by Antoine Fugua, and The Judge by David Dobkin; all American filmmakers.
Black and White is a film about a widowed grandfather who is left as the guardian of his bi-racial little granddaughter. The film stars Academy Award-winners Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer.

The Equalizer features star names such as Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas and Chloe Grace Moretz. The film is an adaptation of the cult ‘80s TV show about a man named McCall with a haunting past.

The Judge is comprised of a star cast including Robert Downey Jr., Vera Farmiga, Dax Shepard, and Billy Bob Thornton. The film is about a big city lawyer named Hank who has to return to his childhood home to confront the truth about his estranged father being suspected of murder.

This is Where I Leave You by American filmmaker Shawn Levy is also set for a world premiere. The film has a star cast ensemble featuring Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll and Kathryn Hahn. The film shows the trials and turmoils of romantic relationships, as well as family disconnect.

Special Presentations and World Premieres
The lineup for special presentations world premieres is exclusive as any movie playing the festival in the first four days couldn't screen anywhere else includes Breakup Buddies by Ning Hao, Men, Women and Children by Jason Reitman starring Adam Sandler and and Jennifer Garner, Dearest by Peter Ho-Sun Chan, Eden by Mia Hansen-Love, The Good Lie by Philippe Falardeau, A Second Chance by Susanne Bier, While We’re Young by Noah Baumbach starring Naomi Watts, Ben Stiller and Amanda Seyfried and Top Five by Chris Rock starring Adam Sandler, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Hart, Jerry Seinfeld, and Rosario Dawson.

Mary Kom directed by Omung Kumar will also have its world premiere at TIFF. The film stars Priyanka Chopra as a world champion boxer. The film is based on 5 time world champion boxer M.C. Mary Kom who worked alongside Chopra to help her mould into the character.

Handling and Bailey released a statement on Mary Kom saying, “Glamorous Indian star Priyanka Chopra completely transforms herself to play Mary Kom, world champion in women’s boxing. From traditional village life in remote Manipur state to high-stakes bouts in India and around the world, this is a remarkable story of triumph."
