‘The Kool Boys’ Tusshar Kapoor And Aftab Shivdasani Bring The ‘Condom Challenge’ to India
Entertainment Dec 27, 2015
First it was the Ice Bucket Challenge. This year, it’s the Condom Challenge. But the latter is a bit more complicated. It's not raising millions of dollars for charity or even connected to a cause.
Never heard of it? The idea seems to have originated back in 2006. The earliest Condom Challenge YouTube videos date back to at least 2007. The challenge has picked up steam again this year, and the basic aim seems to be to fill a condom with water, like a water balloon, and drop it on a friends head. Condoms are much more flexible than balloons, and the goal is to get them to stretch over the person's head completely, potentially snapping and ending with them "wearing" the condom over their head and face. Aren’t you sorry you asked?
Despite the potential dangers posed of an airtight seal over a person's mouth and nose, people all over the Internet have been picking up the gauntlet and posting videos of themselves successfully completing the challenge — for no other cause but to say they did it.
Bollywood actors Tusshar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani have given the stunt some much-needed relevance and purpose by adding a bit of a twist. The duo stars in the upcoming film Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3 together and posted a video of their attempts, dubbing it the "Kool Kondom challenge." At the end of the video, they encourage others to try it and tweet at them with the hashtag #WhyShy.
The idea is to get people talking about sex and protection — topics that people tend to shy away from and that are taboo in Indian society. By opening up the conversation, they hope to encourage discussions about safe sex, condom usage and preventing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
While the attempt to break stigmas is commendable, the stunt is, of course, a transparent promotion of the duo's upcoming film. According to the Times of India, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum 3 is being dubbed India’s first “porn-com” and it pushes the envelope even further than the series's previous two instalments. It will be Bollywood’s first sex comedy of 2016, and the filmmakers promise a risqué ride. The plot revolves around the two main characters getting trapped in the international adult film industry.
The film's trailer was released earlier this month, and it's laced with sexual innuendos, suggestive sound bites and a fair bit of skin. Given that India’s Censor Board is very conservative, the film has been facing some challenges. The committee allegedly called it “extremely vulgar.” After a series of delays, the picture is now set for release on January 22nd, 2016.
