The Golden Globe Nominations: Aziz Ansari’s Nom, Snubs, & Surprises
In a move that surely his diversity-conscious character would appreciate, Aziz Ansari is the first Indian-American comedy actor to be nominated at the Golden Globes, which featured many doozies in its nominations that left us scratching our heads.
A year after #OscarsSoWhite trended on social media, Hollywood is slowly addressing the diversity problem, and there’s no greater place to see this change than in the nominations for awards season. The Golden Globes are the unpredictable bunch though, and often incredulously place the wrong movies in the comedy vs. drama categories, and nominating left-field newbies.
This year was no different, as Ansari got nominated for the Best Actor in a Comedy Series alongside a whole bunch of newbies like Patrick Stewart for Blunt Talk, Rob Lowe for The Grinder, Gael Garcia Bernal for Mozart in the Jungle, where the only constant was Jeffrey Tambor’s role in Transparent. It’s a tough category for all of them since Tambor’s often taken the gold before, but we’re rooting for Ansari.

It’s very surprising for an award show with a musical/comedy category not to nominate one of the monster hits of the year: Straight Outta Compton. Obviously, that would’ve fallen under drama but with the stars of the film and Ice Cube campaigning hard, it’s a shock that it wasn’t in there, especially after its ensemble nomination at the SAGs yesterday.

One of the other maddening choices for the Globes is the acting-only-series/film-shutout pattern especially in the TV category. Starz’s show Outlander garnered two acting nominations, and similarly Mad Men’s stellar final season got barred with only one nomination for Jon Hamm, who’s very likely to get it after his Oscar win. It confounded critics on Twitter this morning when Spotlight also received no acting nominations, but a nominated turn from Mark Ruffalo in the wrong film: Infinitely Polar Bear!
It appeared that the emphasis was on new blood, so Hulu’s first scripted series Casual got a Best Comedy nod, while Netflix’s Narcos replaced the widely contended House of Cards, but I can’t argue with them for nominating Wagner Moura for his terrific performance in the show as Pablo Escobar. It seems that streaming platforms are getting their due with these nods, with Netflix’s clean sweep for six of their original shows.

The nominations also featured double duty for actress Alicia Vikander for Best Actress in a Drama for The Danish Girl, and Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ex Machina, and for Idris Elba for Best Supporting Actor in Beasts of No Nation, and Best Actor in a Mini-Series for his swaggering turn in Luther.

My mean desire for schadenfreude in hoping that terrific child actors Jacob Tremblay in Room or Abraham Attah for Beasts of No Nation might scupper the inevitable Leo Dicaprio win didn’t happen. But there’s no telling, what might happen come Oscar night. But now we know that all bets could go anywhere with the Golden Globes list.
