Shah Rukh Khan is a special breed of superstar, whose 50th birthday inspired thousands to congregate outside his villa Mannat and honouring him on social media with numerous Dubsmash videos, artwork and hashtags. But we have to say we really loved The Acoustic Girls' tribute video to SRK.
Starting with early hits "Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen" and "Manwa Laage," the Acoustic Girls — Amanda Sodhi (on vocals) and Malvika Sirur Hemmady (on guitar) — offer up a great medley of SRK hit songs. It's a great concept and the girls have great voices and pull off including so many tracks in a short span.
Sodhi and Hemmady started The Acoustic Girls in December 2014 and the two bonded over their shared love of Hindi film music and classics. Since then, the duo have uploaded 13 videos in which they tackle tough songs like "Nayan Tarse" and original songs that have got us excited for their upcoming debut album together.
The two have performed gigs across Mumbai and have been working with indie producer Sid Coutto for their album, which they're hugely excited about. “Working with Sid is like a dream come true and we are fortunate to have had the opportunity to have met and worked with greats like him so early in our careers," the girls said in an interview with Your Story.
Mumbai has a special place in their heart as the make-or-break city with stiff competition that tested them out as performers and where they took on pro-bono gigs.
“We kept working hard and learning on the go and took every opportunity that came our way. Performing before an audience and jamming in a closed room are two extremely different things, you need to understand what people like.
"Mumbai is the city to be in for upcoming artists like us. The energy here is amazing and inspires us to do bigger and better things," the girls said in an interview with Your Story.
Sodhi and Hemmady both have music in their bones and have both fronted rock bands. Sodhi previously fronted the pop-rock band The Chudail & Demons and has sung an English bluesy number in Manish Pandya's upcoming film Boom Boom Wale. We're also super excited for her co-directing debut in Attention Please, which covers the burgeoning indie music scene with input from Vishal Dadlani and Indian Ocean. Malvika has taught at various institutes including at Maithili's Institute of Performing Arts and Lokmanya Institute. She was also a part of the band Shakin Pulse in 2012.
Apart from a few bad incidents, the girls have succeeded in being one of the few female bands out there making music, which is something they take great pride in. “We are treated with a lot of care and respect. Also, being an all girl band has been our biggest USP," they said to Your Story.
And who knows maybe King Khan might sign them up for a song in one his films, which would be a dream for the duo!
