With excitement fever pitch, the king of award shows – the 2014 Oscars made its grand entrance yesterday to every fashionistas delight, myself included. Starting with the red carpet pre-show, ABC, OTRC and E! News were among the many channels that broadcasted the media trail to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Like many I watched, deliberated and here’s my take.
The dress that stole the show making it the most trended of the night:
#NairobiBlue
Who could take their eyes off of Lupita Nyong’o in the custom made, voluminous Prada. The hue fondly labelled as ‘Nairobi Blue’ by the actress, complemented her rich skin tone perfectly. The newcomer to the big screen added to the romantic feel of the free flowing gown with a girlishly cute headband.

Appliqué
Best actress for Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett struck gold with this delicate Armani Privé piece of art that cascaded exquisite applique in the fav hue of the night, nude.

Ice Princess
Kristen Bell came themed in her ‘Frozen’ role with this white Roberto Cavalli number that fit her torso like a glove. The bustier style was balanced nicely with a tail that tricked icy embellishments.

While romantic elegance was primarily the theme in pastel to nudes, some actresses took to bold, rich colours that also hit a home run.
Black
If there’s one woman who knows how to dress her body, its Charlize Theron. While some ladies play it safe in this staple hue, Charlize amps up the style quotient in a killer Dior with cheeky peekaboo straps and a tasteful plunging neckline, not to forget a train that screams glamour!

Navy
Gravity star, Sandra Bullock makes a fashion statement in Alexander McQueen. The regal gown hit all kinds of ‘yeh’ factors from the rich satin draping to the subtle elegance with its sweetheart neckline, reminiscent of the silver screen era.

Red
Jennifer Lawrence may have tripped two years in a row at the Oscars but it’s the ‘Lady in Red’ double take (2011) that stuck in our minds. This year she rocks a form fitting Dior with a modern take on the peplum paired with her shorter slick strands, très chic we think.

Trend we loved on the red carpet:
The cover up

Men on the other hand seemed to favour navy when it came to suiting, in particular Leo DiCaprio, Kevin Spacey and Jason Sudeikis.
No.1 highlight of the night had to go to host Ellen DeGeneres who slam dunked it with her slew of funny and relatable comedy stints. The biggest crowd pleaser being the pizza delivery guy to crashing twitter with her most re-tweeted celeb selfie pic.

It was definitely a night of music as well as fashion and film achievement with standing ovations for Pharrell with his “Because I’m Happy”, U2’s Mandela tribute with “Ordinary Love”, Pink sang “Over the Rainbow” in tribute also and Bette Midler with “The wind beneath my wings” for the ‘In Memorium’ which had the singer in tears.
Big wins of the night were Gravity with 7 in total. Newcomer Lupita Nyong’o scored 'Best Supporting Actress' and greeted her win with an emotional speech that ended with, “no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid”.
Jared Leto back to the big screen with 'Dallas Buyer’s Club', won ‘Best Supporting Male’. The star thanked his mother and brother for the win. Best Actress, Cate Blanchett made a point for women in film in her acceptance speech, “In fact, they earn money. The world is round people,” while Best Actor, Matthew McConaughey thanked God most of all.
The film which took home the big prize: Best Motion Picture went to 12 Years A Slave.
