Take A Trip To Unicorn Island With ‘Superwoman’
YouTube sensation "Superwoman" is set to make her big-screen debut with a revealing documentary.
Lilly Singh, AKA Superwoman, is a YouTube superstar. Launching her own online channel eventually led to international superstardom and high-profile collaborations. For many, she is considered an overnight sensation and a "special case" when it comes to the power of social media. But what many don't know is the authentic spirit and drive for determination that have led the York University psych grad to connect with millions of people around the world.
Her upcoming documentary is titled A Trip To Unicorn Island and it chronicles her world tour and life, revealing her struggles and inspirations to be who she is today. A sneak-peek of the documentary was released at VidCon last Friday. It's available for viewing below.
“It’s a story about me going through the trials and tribulations of my life, and really making the decision to be happy,” said Singh to Entertainment Weekly. “How can I tell this story of not just my tour but my life in general to people that came to the show or couldn’t come to the show? I didn’t want to make it a video because I wanted to transcend beyond the audience I have. I wanted it to be in this fashion of storytelling where you could come on a journey through my life framed through my tour."
What's a YouTube star doing with a world tour, you ask? It certainly isn't a cheap thrill by any means. Miss Singh not only uses the stage platform to sing, dance and make people laugh through theatrics and skits but also chats about serious topics with her audience — topics such as her family life and her battle with depression. In fact, she launched her YouTube channel and started creating videos as a way to overcome her insecurities and deal with the depression that she was experiencing.
When asked to comment on her popularity and success, she told Entertainment Weekly, “It’s overwhelming. I could do the answer that everyone says: It’s so wonderful. But what I will tell you is that every time I go on the stage, I’m trying to be authentic and speaking and hoping that people will relate to me."
