How to use one of the hottest runway hair trends in your own summer look.
From elaborate hairpieces to minimalist barrettes, hair accessories were a popular pick on the Spring/Summer 2015 ready-to-wear runways. Here are five wearable looks that stood out the most for me.
Bottega Veneta
There were a couple different accessories spotted on the Bottega Veneta runway. The first was a set of bejeweled comb-in barrettes around a loose, messy bun. For something better suited for everyday wear, consider the Markiza Mineral Bobby Set ($28 CDN) from Anthropologie. The other was a thin, sparkly hairband on hair pulled back loosely with teasing at the top and wispy strands at the front. To add some Indian flair, use a gold chain or necklace in place of a hairband. Tuck the ends of the necklace under some hair behind your ear and use bobby pins to keep it in place.
Missoni
This one was more about the hair accessory than the style — bright fabrics wrapped into a turban or around a bun. I’ll admit that it’s a bold style, but a thick, fabric headband adds a touch of creativity in just the same way. I like the new Cara Lace Head Wrap ($31.29 CDN) from Nordstrom, but you can use just about anything to get this look. For instance, if you’re wearing an Indian outfit that has a plain dupatta, tie that into a headband and that way you don’t have to worry about looking after it.
Lanvin
At Lanvin, models had their hair slicked back in a tight chignon with a gold bar below it. It’s a nice way to keep those stray pieces underneath in place when you tie up your hair. Try the ASOS 2-Pack Sleek Bar Hair Clip set ($10.58 CDN) online. Alternatively, you can use coloured bobby pins to recreate the look — put one in, then slide the next one in so that it sits right above the first pin. Add four or five rows to create the effect of a bar.
Dolce & Gabbana
Hairstylist Guido Palau started by prepping strands with a light- to medium-hold finishing spray, like Redken Fashion Work 12 Hairspray ($25.80 CDN) and then created a centre part before pulling the hair over the ears and back into a low, sleek knot. He then covered the knots in blooming red roses and ornate red and gold hairpieces. To recreate this look, use reusable fabric flowers and in place of the headpiece, drape the necklace from an Indian costume jewelry set above your bun like a garland.
Valentino
At Valentino, models flaunted a centre part with beachy waves and a thin headband with gold seashells and starfish on top of the hair like a crown and the pieces from the back coiled around the band creating the illusion of a half-pony. Get these beach waves at home by treating hair with a lightweight texturizing spray like Alterna Bamboo Beach Summer Ocean Waves Tousled Texture Spray ($25.50 CDN). For a South Asian variation of the look, grab a one-inch section of hair from above either ear; twist and then pin them together at the back of your head. Use bobby pins to secure a tikka (the kind you’d wear on your forehead) at the back between the two twists.
