Easy tips for incorporating fitness into your family's everyday routine.
Experts say that more active and healthier children tend to excel more in school. As a parent, you're always on the go, and there may not be enough time to get up and get your butt to the gym, yet alone have a great workout. Setting a good example for your children is very important when it comes to keeping them healthy. Kids see parents as superheroes they look up to.
Being an active family starts with better knowledge of exercise and nutrition. It's easier to retain this information from family involvement than from classes at school. It will make kids want to stay active and eat a healthy diet, and it improves the overall health of everyone involved.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine as reported in life script, children and adults who spend 70 percent or more of their walking hours seated each day are at higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease compared to those who are active.
When you're young, your fitness level is associated with lower body fat percentage, lower total cholesterol and improved HDL cholesterol and this moves into adulthood. This also lowers the risk of obesity; obesity rates have more than tripled in the past 30 years according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
With obesity comes an increased risk of several health conditions, which continue on throughout your life, including high blood pressure and cholesterol, type-2 diabetes and asthma.
Here are a few tips for getting more active as family.
Limit Screen Time
When it comes to getting your family off the sofa and on their feet, there are many things you can do together. Start off by limiting their screen time, including cell phones, TV and videogames. This will actually force them to do something more productive.
Take Classes Together
Join a family community centre and enroll together in courses such as swimming, soccer or tae kwon doe. Make time to go on bike rides and walks around the neighbourhood or parks.
Plan Outdoor Fun
Plan a family fun day where you go out and play games such as hide and seek, tag or jump rope, all of which are great physical activities without feeling like exercise.
Indoor Fitness Games
Try fitness games such as Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox Kinect. These are great ways to stay active on rainy days or in cold winters, and uses their love of videogames in a healthy way!
Remember when you suggest getting active to your kids, expect them to say no. They're not going to get up right away, so make it fun and enjoyable. Play with them instead of making it a chore, and always be their cheerleader. It may take a while to get moving in the right direction, but the benefits of fitness last a lifetime.
