A Lot of Designers Used Lips as the Focal Point of their Beauty Looks — but with a Little Bit of a Twist!
Bold lip shades definitely made a comeback on this year’s spring runways. Statement lips are nothing new — we see them every season — but they was a little different this time around in the spring 2015 ready-to-wear shows. Instead of the perfectly defined lips we’re used to, a lot of the makeup artists did a colourful lip that was softer around the edges for a more stained, blotted look.
The beautiful thing about this lip trend is that it works with any colour, like the bright orangey-reds at Zac Posen and Missoni, or the deep raspberry shade spotted on the Dolce & Gabbana runway (pictured above.) Meanwhile, at No. 21, we saw a much darker red wine colour, and at Burberry Prorsum, models wore various shades of red — all different colours, but with the same soft finish.
If you’re used to seeing yourself in lighter and more neutral lip colours, this technique is a good way to ease into trying bolder shades. It just looks a little subtler because the colour isn’t as saturated. I’ve found that a lot of women with darker skin tones shy away from doing a bold lip, usually because they think it’s too flashy and that they can’t pull it off. I used to be one of those women. But I’ve since learned that, in addition to using this technique to tone down the colour, the trick is just finding the right shade for your skin tone.
Sometimes the best way to find that perfect lip colour is to experiment with a few different ones to see what works. But with hundreds of different shades available now, that’s probably easier said than done. So here are a few tips to help get you started.
Dark Skin Tones
Too much of an orange tint can sometimes make darker complexions look dull and washed out. But with darker skin, you can never go wrong with deep berry, red, and plum shades. Mindy Kaling is one star who really wears these bold shades well. In fact, her two favourite lip colours are Julie Hewett Icon of Beauty Lipstick in Scarlett (a fuchsia colour) and the shade Film Noir (a burgundy plum colour) from Hewett’s Noir Collection.
Medium Skin Tones
Medium skin tones are usually fairly neutral, which means they can pull off almost any colour. But I find that reds with an orange tint really complement the undertones in medium and olive complexions — the picture of Sonam Kapoor above is a perfect example. Brighter raspberry shades also work well.
Light Skin Tones
You can’t go wrong with classic red and coral shades, but hot pink and bubble gum lip colours also work really well to help brighten light, paler complexions. Kalki Koechlin flaunted a perfect pink shade at the 2012 IIFA Awards. To get a similar look, try Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Backstage Bambi.
