Bollywood has no doubt carved a niche in North America with its entertainment. It has over the years not just entertained Indian audiences but has also garnered a lot of love and support from global audiences. With that in mind, the creators of Happy New Year – Red Chillies Entertainment – brought the energetic SLAM Tour to six cities across North America -Houston, New Jersey, Washington DC, Chicago, Vancouver and San Jose.
I experienced the star-studded concert in New Jersey where the team was on a promotional tour for the upcoming Diwali release Happy New Year. The venue was packed with almost 20,000 eager fans celebrating- not just their Indian heritage, but also the show’s music and comedy.
Stars in attendance were Badshaah Shah Rukh Khan, gorgeous Deepika Padukone, comedian Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Malaika Arora Khan, Vivaan Shah, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Kanika Kapoor, and director of Main Hoon Na (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007), Farah Khan.

The show began with SRK and Padukone dancing to the songs of Chennai Express– popular hits from Cocktail (2012) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) Looking beautiful and elegant in a bejeweled long high-neck lehenga, Abhishek Bachchan made a powerful entrance, dancing to his ever-popular songs Dhoom Dhoom and Dus Bahaane. He later engaged with the crowd, taking a selfie with the entire stadium. Later, wearing a gold-laced sherwani, he acknowledged the intense Gujarati and Punjabi populations housed in New Jersey. Lightening the mood, Farah Khan and Irani reenacted comedy from Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (2012)

SRK made a flying entrance into the concert, “We have been trying to get him (SRK) for the last four-five years now,” host Kanu Chauhan tells The Hindu. “But things have worked out only this September. There is a great excitement among not only Indian Americans, but also the entire South Asia community and the mainstream Americans too.” SRK stole the show with his classics like Yeh Kali Kali Aankhein (Baazigar) and Badshaah Oh Badshaah (Badshah).
“I am blessed to get a lot of love and support from people around the world. This is our way of giving this love back and thanking you all. I am super excited and looking forward to being in your city along with the director & the cast of our next film Happy New Year and my colleagues Farah, Deepika, Malaika, Abhishek, Boman, Sonu, Vivaan, Kanika and Honey Singh. We promise you an evening of love, laughter and entertainment. So mark your calendar and be there at SLAM, THE TOUR,” said SRK.
Abhishek and SRK both danced to Dhoom 2’s title track, followed by a comical interaction between the two stars: Abhishek teased and tried to persuade SRK to do Dhoom 4, leading to the contest, where the stars gave away a Harley Davidson motorbike. The highlight of the show was when SRK chose a cute Punjabi couple to come on stage. SRK heartwarmingly teased the husband, by testing how possessive, and romantic, he was with his wife.

Ram Sampath created a very special musical score for the show."Working on the SLAM! track was a blast," Sampath tells The Indian Express. "As per the brief, we went for stadium scale hip-hop in order to capture the grandeur and energy of the SLAM tour. When Earl Edgar laid down a high octane rap which complimented my singing really well, we knew we were home. Enjoy SLAM! The Tour."

Padukone and Kapoor introduced Lovely from Happy New Year and Singh rocked the stage, especially with the ever popular song Lungi Dance – which has put the singer on the international map. He danced and sang with other stars, including Sood. The crowd was won with popular numbers like Brown Rang and Blue Eyes. Mesmerized with Singh’s latest tracks, the crowd couldn’t help but dance to his songs. SLAM! is a must see!
