Must-try manicure inspiration from the Spring/Summer 16 runways.
As soon as the weather starts to get warm, our nails get a new personality. The season has always been about bright, fun colours, but this year we’re taking things up a notch. The SS16 runways featured nail designs that were all about showing off your personality — from the nude and subdued to the bright and colourful.
Get Graphic
Give your mani a graphic spruce by adding a solid black line to a neutral colour. This trend was seen all over the runways on the Spring/Summer 2016 runway, including a more minimalist version at Ji Oh’s New York Fashion Week show. This more structured look was created for Tanya Taylor. On the base, use a light nude like Sally Hansen’s Arm Candy ($7.99 CDN). Use a thin makeup brush to draw the dark lines using a colour like Sally Hansen’s Dark Hue-mor ($7.99 CDN). Try drawing lines off-centre or create a mismatched manicure with a combination of horizontal, diagonal and vertical lines to give your nails even more personality.

Bedazzling Nails
Go big or go home, right? That certainly seemed the idea behind the nail look at Manish Arora’s Spring/Summer 2016 runway show. The models donned bedazzled nails full of colour, with gold henna designs on their hands to top it off. Start with a pretty pastel colour for the base. Don’t worry about imperfections, because those can easily be covered up with nail art jewels. Grab a pack of Kiss Salon Secrets Luxe Accents Kit ($5.99 CDN) and use the included nail glue to place colourful jewels all over each of your nails.

Negative Space with a Pop of Colour

Negative space manicures are all the rage this season. It’s nail art, minus the actual art. This is a trend that let’s your nails do all the talking, and allows you to give your tips a fun look that’s still appropriate for the office. Rita Remark, lead nail artist for Essie Canada, created this look for Mackage’s Spring/Summer 2016 show in Toronto.
“The collection had a lot of black and white with pops of turquoise and orange, so I used turquoise to add a subtle pop of colour along the cuticle,” Remark said. “We wanted something that wasn't ladylike — a bit more contemporary and edgy . . . a real cool-girl nail art for spring."
On the base, Remark used Essie’s Master Plan ($7.99 CDN), a soft grey. On the tips is Essie’s Licorice ($7.99 CDN), a true black lacquer. The pop of turquoise colour near the cuticle is Essie’s Naughty Nautical ($7.99 CDN).
