Whether it’s IVF, surrogacy or adoption — some celebs are single-handedly managing parenthood, and this approach is becoming much more common in India as well.
Celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar recently made headlines by coming out as a proud single father of twins via surrogacy.
“I am ecstatic to share with you all the two most wonderful additions to my life, my children and lifelines; Yash and Roohi,” he said in a statement. “I feel enormously blessed to be a parent to these pieces of my heart who were welcomed into this world with the help of marvels of medical science.”

Nontraditional parenthood methods are on the rise in India, but could an impending law affect these efforts?
While The Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016, seeks to end single parenthood through surrogacy in India, rumour has it that other celeb singles and couples could be following in Johar’s footsteps.
Social and cultural traditions dictate that marriage and biological parenthood go hand in hand. But by breaking “socially accepted norms,” Johar and other celebs are proving that sound, stable (and even single) adults can and should have the right to have children.

1. Tusshar Kapoor

Kapoor took the world by surprise when he announced the birth of his son via surrogacy and IVF in June 2016, making him Bollywood’s first single dad. “The paternal instincts in me have been overpowering my heart and mind for some time now,” he said. “Therefore, I am thrilled beyond words to have Laksshya, now the greatest source of joy in my life.”
2. Madonna

The 58-year-old singer is a mom again to twin girls. Madonna’s latest adoption journey was without the help of a partner and was an ode to her long history with the people of Malawi. Madonna previously adopted her kids David Banda, 11, and Mercy James, six, from the country in Southeast Africa.
3. Manisha Koirala

Koirala battled cancer five years ago and the 46-year-old Bollywood actress is ready to adopt a baby girl. “If everything goes well, I’m planning to adopt a baby girl. I just hope everything goes right and it all falls into place,” she said. “I want to be there for the child, and I’ll make sure that I plan my life around this. I’m super excited about this new phase in my life, and I can’t wait for it to begin.”
