Sensational Skin: Review of the Hammam and Gommage Treatment at the Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris at Shangri-La Hotel
Beauty May 26, 2015
Taking care of our skin is always essential, but a little extra care is necessary when the weather is changing. I was lucky to get an appointment at the luxurious Miraj Hammam Spa at the Shangri-La Hotel in Toronto for the Hammam and Gommage treatment and it was unforgettable.
I was welcomed at the front desk, where I filled out a form asking what type of pressure I prefer, as well as any sensitivities and health concerns I have. I was then taken to the change room where I was given a locker with a digital lock to put my belongings in, fresh slippers in my size and a robe.
I was then introduced to Inna who would be giving me the treatment. I was given the option of disposable undergarments and a sheet to wear like a towel and then I was taken into a beautiful, gigantic steam room made of Jerusalem gold marble. The room is extremely hot at 110 degrees Celsius. I was given a towel to lie down on and a cup of fresh, cold water. Inna explained that I could turn the steam off if it felt too hot and that she’d check in on me in eight minutes and would be in the next room if I needed anything. I spent 15 (very relaxing) minutes in the steam room and it felt amazing.
We moved to the front of the steam area, which is 100 degrees Celsius, and I lay face down on my tummy, on a towel, and Inna, wearing Keess gloves, massaged me with eucalyptus and black Moroccan soap. I started to feel like a new person. I turned over onto my back and was exfoliated from neck to toe.
That’s what gommage means — exfoliation. Inna recommends this treatment every season change, or as needed. Hammam and gommage removes all dead skin, it helps with ingrown hairs, and it leaves skin glowing and smooth. The smell of the eucalyptus is magnificent. Argan oil was then added for moisture and I was rinsed with lukewarm water to aid in blood circulation.
Inna waited outside while I put my robe back on and led me to a tented bed in a beautiful lounge. Within minutes, a plate of grapes and baklava arrived with tea. I exhaled, lay in the bed and enjoyed the experience.
The treatment takes about 30 minutes and costs $135 CDN plus HST and gratuity, and products to use at home are available for purchase. The treatment can be done solo or with a friend or group. My skin has never felt so good and the service and the atmosphere were magical.
