SARS-Like Virus Kills 18, Chinese H7N9 Kills 32
World's medical industry and scientists have discovered yet another virus to be concerned about that has the potential of becoming a pandemic.
This new coronavirus, with symptoms starkly similar to the deadly SARS virus, has so far affected 34 people according to ctvnews, all with some connection to the Middle East region. 18 did not survive. The calgaryherald states that in particular, quite a few of these cases are in Saudi Arabia. Out of 7 recent cases, 5 have already died. All affected had been in contact with one another, mostly at the hospital where they were being treated. The two remaining are in critical condition.
Scientists have determined the genetic sequence to have come from bats, however the source and method through which it was injected in the human population is currently unknown.
Toronto SARS expert Dr Allison McGeer(of Mount Sinai Hospital) is currently travelling to Saudi Arabia, along with a few WHO members, to fully determine the severity of the issue. The country, unable to handle and contain the outbreak, has requested outside help.
The World Health Organizations(WHO) has advised all countries to take caution, and closely monitor the respiratory health cases to prevent spread and further deaths.
To make matter worse, the H7N9 virus pandemic in China has already killed 32 out of the 131 known cases. The symptoms of this sometimes-deadly virus include severe pneumonia, fever, cough and shortness of breath. The virus, having emerged from chickens, has caused a staggering loss of 40 billion yuan($6.5 USD) to China's poultry industry, as the demand for chicken plummets.
