Introducing Galaxy Gear – a $300 USD, Android-powered watch with a 1.6-inch touch screen. The cool invention only works when tethered to Samsung's new Galaxy Note 3 smartphone or Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet using Bluetooth.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch were both announced last month at the company’s Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany. As of now the Galaxy Note 3 is the only smart device that is compatible with the smartwatch which was released worldwide on Oct 2.
Below outlines the features that can be synced with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
Notification & Smart Relay
Seamless communication from Gear to your phone.
When you get an important notification on Galaxy Gear, your phone will automatically show the message by picking up the phone.
Call
Calls always within reach.
Galaxy Gear enables you to dial and receive a call without ever missing a call.
S Voice
Optimised S Voice makes spoken and typed commands equally fast options.
S Voice, Samsung's branded method of voice control has it's limits.
You can tell S Voice to open apps, make calls, send texts, schedule appointments, set alarms and timers and ask what time it is in other cities. Compared to its counterpart on the phone, this is more of a basic list of available options.
Memographer
Quick snapshots to create lasting memories.
1.9-megapixel BSI auto-focus camera is placed on the band.
That strap-mounted camera is designed to capture low-res shots, 10-second 720p videos, includes a 1.9-megapixel BSI sensor and an auto-focus lens.
When taking a picture you can choose to have it stored on the device. Another available option is to transfer the image via Bluetooth over to the phone where it gets added into a folder in a gallery so images don't get muddled with the phone's previous pictures.
And of course, Gear lets you share these memos instantly through SNS. Lastly, you can take videos in 15-second segments – presumably due to the limited storage space on the Gear – and you can choose between 720p (16:9) and 640 x 640 (1:1).
Voice Memo
Touchless voice memos.
The smartwatch is voice enabled and can also store memos.
Auto Lock
When the distance between your phone and your Galaxy Gear goes beyond a limit of 1.5m, the phone will automatically lock to ensure security.
Find my device
When you can't find your phone, use Galaxy Gear to command it to beep, illuminate, or vibrate. The reverse is also possible.
Media Controller
Play or pause songs with Galaxy Gear, even when your phone is not within reach.
Pedometer
Make sure you achieve your fitness goals. The Pedometer lets you monitor fitness levels not only during workouts but throughout the day.
Weather
You don't need to unlock your phone and go to a weather app for an update. Galaxy Gear's Weather feature keeps the latest forecast at your fingertips or voice command.
The Galaxy Gear has received some mixed reviews since it's release last Wednesday but don't forget its still in its first generation phase that will no doubt improve with future models.
