We are sad today to share the news of pop star Prince's demise. As the world mourns his loss, we take a look at some defining moments of his journey and what others have to say.
The singer was fighting flu for several weeks and had cancelled two shows. There had been an alarm a week earlier, when his plane had to make an emergency landing and the star was rushed to hospital. Prince, 57, passed away at his home this morning, according to his publicist.
We remember five milestones from his journey.
1. In 1984, Prince released the Purple Rain album and movie.
The album topped the Billboard chart for nearly half the year. Watch him perform the song below.
2. In 1994, he released "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" which became a global hit.
3. In 2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Prince stated in his speech, "When I first started out in the music industry, I was most concerned with freedom. Freedom to produce, freedom to play all the instruments on my records, freedom to say anything I wanted to. I embarked on a journey more fascinating than I could ever have imagined. But a word to the wise. Without real spiritual mentoring, too much freedom can lead to the soul's decay. And a word to the young artists.. a real friend or mentor is not on your table. A real friend and mentor cares for your soul as much as they do the other one. This world and its wicked systems become harder and harder to deal with without a real friend or mentor. And I wish all of you the best. "
Watch Alicia Keys's speech at the induction of Prince into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame below.
4. His 2007 show for the Super Bowl was one of the best to date.
Catch a glimpse of the show below.
5. He performed his last concert in Atlanta's Fox theatre a week ago.
Social media has poured out tributes in honour of the late star. We note some of the celebrities' reactions below.
American-comedian Steve Harvey was pained by the news.
Hollywood actor and producer Elijah Wood expressed his shock and gratitude in the following words.
Hip hop pioneer and Rush communications CEO Russell Simons bade farewell to the legendary star with a succinct and strong expression, "Rest in power."
Singer and songwriter Brian Dales shared an emotional message in memory of Prince.
Hip hop recording artist Big Sean praised and thanked the star for his legacy.
American singer and songwriter Justin Timberlake shared a long message on Instagram, expressing his memories and profound sadness at the passing away of Prince.
"It was Raspberry Breet. I was 4 years old. Yes, 4. I remember that I instantly loved it. "Mommy, who is that singing?" Seems weird but it's true.
More than a "once in a lifetime" artist.. Just a ONCE IN FOREVER ARTIST. I'm still in shock as I write this and I feel the overwhelming grief. But, we should all turn away from that and HONOR this musician that changed all of our lives, our perspectives, our feeling, our whole being. From another planet? Probaby. Royalty, for sure. Us worthy..? Laughable. They say don't meet your idols… That they let you down. But, some of my greatest, funniest (yes, he was hilarious), and most prolific encounters and conversations about music came from the moments that I spent with him. It would be silly to say that he has inspired our music… It's beyond that. He's somewhere within every song I've ever written.
I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician. But his music will never die.
Prince. NOTHING COMPARES…#RIPPrince."
