The best red carpet looks for TIFF 2013, inspired by 100 years of Indian cinema.
The 2013 Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing and, I don’t know about you, but half the fun of it for me is watching the stars make their grand entrance on the red carpet. While you may not be premiering your next big blockbuster anytime soon, there’s no reason you can’t celebrate this year’s awards season by trying out some of the best red carpet looks, each inspired by 100 years of Indian cinema.
Scarlett Johansson: Classic Bollywood
Nargis & Scarlett Johansson
If there’s one actress today who can flawlessly pull of a vintage look, it’s Scarlett Johansson. Her red carpet look at the 2009 Los Angeles Shorts Festival was reminiscent of renowned Bollywood actress Nargis, who ruled the silver screen in the 50s—Johansson sported the same short, wavy bob parted on the side, paired with simple eye makeup and bold lips. Johansson’s new movie Under the Skin premieres at TIFF this year.

Hair:
· Create a side part and spray all over with a thermal protector. I personally love Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection.
· Curl your hair in small sections using a wider-barrel curling iron. Pin each section up immediately after curling so that it doesn’t straighten.
· After your hair cools down completely, unpin the curls and brush it out with a paddle brush to create loose, free-flowing waves.
· Pull the shorter side of your parting back behind your ear and pin it in place. To get the shorter bob look with longer hair, just pin the bottom curls underneath to create the same effect. Finish it off with a stronghold hairspray to keep it all in place. I use Redken Control Addict 28 – High Control Hairspray because it tends to hold all night.

Makeup:
· Using black liquid eyeliner, draw a thin line above your upper lash line, from the inside corner to the outer end of your lid.
· Use a volumizing black mascara, like COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Extensions LashBlast Mascara, to give your lashes extra length and dimension.
· Line your bottom lash line with a brown pencil liner.
· For the lips, try a bright cherry red, or for something a little subtler, darker corals work too. Make sure to use a lip liner first to avoid feathering. The Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in Marigold looks great against darker skin tones.
Parineeti Chopra: Sexy Seventies
Zeenat Aman & Parineeti Chopra
Bollywood up-and-comer Parineeti Chopra is relatively new to the whole red carpet thing, but she’s doing pretty well so far I’d say. I loved her simple but sexy look at the IIFA Rocks event last year. The dark cat-eye makeup and soft pink lips reminded me a lot of Bollywood's Golden Girl Zeenat Aman in the 70s. Chopra will be making her TIFF debut this year with the Canadian premiere of her new movie Shuddh Desi Romance.

Hair
· Tease your hair in sections, starting from the front and working your way back to the crown.
· Pull your hair into a ponytail that sits on your crown—don’t worry about being too perfect. To get a little extra lift at the top, gently pull some of the hair out of the ponytail in the middle.
· You don’t want it to look too sleek, but if you have a lot of flyaways, spritz some hairspray on your fingers to smooth them down.
· Tousle your fingers through the ponytail to give it a little extra body.

Makeup
· Line your top lash line with a black liquid liner, bringing it out farther so that it ends in line with the tip of your eyebrow—it should flick up a bit at the end. Join the end of this line to the inner corner of your eye by tracing the top of your upper lid. Fill in the rest of your lid with a pigmented black shadow, like the M.A.C Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Blackground. Use a black pencil liner on the bottom lash line.
· For the lips, pick something neutral, like a subtle rose or nude shade. My new go-to neutral shade is Joe Fresh Beauty Cream Lipstick in Kiss.
Julia Roberts: Eternal Beauty
Julia Roberts & Madhuri Dixit
Julia Roberts has always reminded me a lot of Madhuri Dixit—they’re both just as gorgeous today as they were in the 90s. And they’re both known for their bright smiles and natural, but always classy, looks on the red carpet. Roberts will be attending TIFF this year to promote her film, August: Osage County, and I’m guessing she’ll look just as stunning as she did at the L.A. premiere for Mirror Mirror.

Hair
· While your hair is damp, separate it into a top layer and a bottom layer. Then divide each of those layers in half. Tie each section into a messy bun. When your hair is dry, open up the buns to reveal loose, beachy waves.
· Use a curling cream or spray, like göt2b Beach Trippin’ Salt-Infusion Waving Spray, to define the texture.
· You can also use a flat iron with 1” plates to create waves. Clamp a small section of hair between the plates, wrap the hair around the iron once, and then pull the iron down the strands. Use a flexible-hold spray to hold the curls without making them stiff.

Makeup
· Create a naturally flawless looking complexion by using a BB cream and powder instead of a thick liquid foundation, followed by a rose blush lightly dusted over your cheekbones.
· Draw a thin line with black liquid liner along your upper lash line. The line should be thicker on the outside of your eye and gradually thinner toward the inner corner—there should be hardly any product on the inner corner. For a subtler effect, try using a dark brown shade instead of black. Go easy on the mascara.
· Use a neutral, barely-there gloss on your lips to keep the look natural. I’m a fan of the new Lise Watier Haute Lumière High Shine Lip Gloss in Infra Rose—the built-in mirror and LED light in the cap make it perfect for touch-ups.
