Preity Zinta Files Complaint Against Ness Wadia

Bollywood actor Preity Zinta has filed a complaint with the police against her former boyfriend, businessman Ness Wadia.

Zinta is alleging that Ness abused her inside the Wankhede Stadium in South Mumbai on May 30. That day, an IPL match was played between the Kings XI Punjab and the Chennai Super Kings. Together the couple owns Kings XI Punjab.

Following the submission of Zinta’s complaint, a first information report (FIR) was filed against Wadia. According to the police, it was registered under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

Wadia has responded by saying, "I am shocked at the complaint and the allegations made against me and they were totally false and baseless."

Zinta's lawyer, Hitesh Jain, has since issued a statement saying, "Although people are terming it as a case of molestation, in the FIR Preity has nowhere used the word molestation. Neither has she alleged sexual molestation or sexual assault on her."

''The FIR points to conduct in public, the use of force and the offensive language by Ness which made her feel ashamed as a woman before the public at large," he goes on to explain.

Maharashtra State Women's Rights Commission called for the police to arrest Wadia within 24 hours, due to the delay of action in the case.

"This is a sensitive case and police have taken no action more than 24 hours after the complaint was filed. The incident happened at a public place. Police have assured us they would record statements of witnesses and examine CCTV footage over the next few hours and take actions within 24 hours," said Chitra Wagh, a member of the state's Women's Rights Commission.

Zinta is asking the media to keep its distance during the investigation. She says, "This is a very difficult time for me and I would like to request the media to please respect my privacy regarding this matter. My intention is not to harm anyone but only to protect myself."

In a recent twist to the story two secretaries with the Wadia Group received phone calls; one also got an SMS which stated, "Don't do any mischief with the lady." The phone number has reportedly been traced to Iran. The caller identified himself as fugitive underworld don Ravi Pujari, the police said.

The actor and her boyfriend ended their five-year relationship in 2009.
