Simple tips for first-time dads.
During this tender time a woman’s hormones are raging and she might even feel a little bit crazy. She suffers morning sickness, she’s at the doctor all the time (especially towards the end), and she’s often exhausted. While she may be the one carrying the baby, a pregnant woman isn’t the only one expecting! There are lots of ways dads-to-be can get involved and be supportive. Read on for some great helpful tips for hubbies.
"Expect that things she used to do are no longer easy for her to do; and even if she's willing, she won't be able to do as much," states Paul Woods, MD, a family doctor (and father of four) in Hibbing, Minnesota. "You'll (partners) willingly need to step up to the plate and do more things around the house than ever before."
As women go through changes physically, emotionally, and hormonally, they can become more prone to having emotional outbreaks. It’s nothing to take personally; your partner is probably just exhausted from carrying around another human in their body.
When it comes to dealing with nausea or morning sickness, help her eat more small healthy meals and snacks. Everyone knows food is important to pregnant women. But what the uninitiated might not realize is that time is of the essence. The bottom line is, when she says she's hungry, she means it. Fruits and veggies are key. Soda crackers are also great first thing in the morning, so keep them beside the bed or in the bathroom.
Leg cramps can be extremely painful with all the extra weight straining the legs. The baby uses up a lot of nutrients like calcium and magnesium, which is also another reason the muscles are contracting. Try gently stretching her muscles with a gentle massage. Bonus points go to the man that gives his woman massages any time of the day, pregnant or not!
Catching sound sleep during pregnancy is difficult due to increasing fetus size. Some doctors specifically recommend that pregnant women should sleep on the left side, because the liver is on the right side of your abdomen, lying on the left side helps keep the uterus off that large organ. Sleeping on the left side also improves circulation to the heart and allows for the best blood flow to the fetus, uterus, and kidneys. Ask what your doctor recommends and help you partner get into a habit of sleeping calmly.
A pregnant woman’s hormones are very volatile, and being a supportive partner will pay off in the long run, a recent study suggests. Your understanding attitude could help the mother-to-be and ensure a happy and healthy baby. The quality of a relationship is the strongest indicator of a woman’s prenatal mental health, the study found. On the other hand, unhappy relationships are closely linked to depression. Poor mental health has been associated with premature birth, low birth weight and health problems that can last into your little one’s school years.
Accompany her to the doctors and help her get in some sleep. Who can refuse back rubs before bed and herbal teas? Taking care of her will help maintain your relationship and be good for your growing family.
