Everything From Books To Magazines To Relatives And Neighbors Have A Plethora Of Advice About Pregnancy Do's And Don'ts, But What's The Truth?
Pregnancy is a turning point in a woman’s life. While we no longer believe in the popular misconceptions that taking birth control will prevent future pregnancy or that you can get pregnant the first time you have sexual intercourse, there are still popular myths that continue to be a part of our dominant discourse that still cause women to have misunderstandings and misconceptions about their bodies, menstrual cycles, and of course their chances of becoming pregnant.
According to Michael Franco of How Stuff Works, there would be many homemade natural remedies that women will consume if they wanted to conceive, which included drinking a potion made from wolf’s penis or wearing a charm made from a quail’s heart. If these didn’t work, she could buy silverware as a gift for someone to appease the fertility gods. With so much legend and fiction surrounding fertility and pregnancy filled with superstition, it is indeed quite surprising that many myths continue to be a part of our daily dialogues.
Here are some of them to titillate your mind:
Drinking Robitussin Will Make You Fertile
According to Deborah Gaines of Parents.com, the expectorant ingredient called guaifenesin found in Robitussin is said to thin your cervical mucus making it easier for the sperm to swim through the cervix to reach the egg. While yes, guaifenesin can indeed help create thinner mucus but it won’t aid to make your body more fertile. Consuming Robitussin will not affect, eventually, affect the quantity or the consistency of the mucus.
Having Irregular Periods Doesn’t Affect Your Chances of Getting Pregnant
Lubna Pal, author and associate professor of obstetrics tells ABC News, “If your time of the month is wildly unpredictable, it can definitely impact how long it takes you to get pregnant. If you have only a few periods a year, you're automatically reducing your probability of conceiving, and if your cycle varies in duration from month to month, it'll be harder to pinpoint exactly when you're ovulating.” Therefore, you should still take birth control or other forms of contraception if you are not intending to get pregnant. However, if you are, the irregular periods should not be a cause of worry as you are still ovulating.
Having Sex Every Day Can Result in a Pregnancy
Having sex ten times a day won’t result in a pregnancy unless it is planned ahead to coincide with the duration of the ovulation. According to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) study, there was no difference found among couples who had sex daily or every other day in terms of their pregnancy rates.
