Looking for an ideal gift for your child this holiday season that isn't a gadget? Why not get them a great book. Below we list popular, award-winning children’s picture books of 2013.
This year, help your youngster expand their minds and their vocabulary. Choose anything from the books that we’ve cherished since we were children, to the latest award winning publications and it'll be equally special. Here's an opportunity to help your child develop a love for reading as well spending quality time with them. Together enjoy these beautifully illustrated books which in turn can teach them a lesson or two while having fun.
The Dark
This year, award winning author Lemony Snicket, who has penned popular young adult books A Series of Unfortunate Events, released a poetic children’s book about a boy named Laszlo who is afraid of the dark.

The dark lives in the same house as Laszlo. While the dark usually stays in the basement, one night it comes to Laszlo’s bedroom and he is forced to confront the dark.
This cute book is entertaining for adults and a great way to teach children that there is no need to be afraid of the dark.
Same, Same But Different
This first South Asia Book Award winner is the story of two pen pals – Elliot from America and Kailash in India. Through an exchange of letters and pictures your children can follow the similarities and differences between the two boys’ lifestyles.

This book is not only a lesson that you can be best friends with someone far away, but also a lovely introduction to the charm of letter-writing. The inviting point-of-view and vivid illustrations might surely encourage your youngsters to pick up the pen and paper.
Where The Wild Things Are

Maurice Sendak just doesn’t go out of style. Ever. Have a Wild Rumpus party with your young ones as you introduce them to your childhood hero Max and his adventures with the wild things. Your children might finally be able to believe that you were once a kid too.
The Arrival
By Shaun Tan
This wordless, beautifully illustrated graphic novel and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book is a great way to help your children imagine their own stories over and over again.

It will also enable them to understand the journey many of their parents, grandparents and great grandparents took to start a new life.
The Rumor
This humorous rhyming story was nominated for the 2013 South Asia Book Award and is a cautionary tale about rumormongering. The book concerns the mythical village of Baddbaddpur where people tell tales “so tall that if you put them on top of the other, they would reach the stars.”

The main character Pandurang is so "dour he can make milk turn sour,” yet one day he coughs up a feather.
As the story of the event is passed from person to person, it grows into a tale so tall that it takes on a life of its own with funny magical effects on the ill-tempered Pandurang.
So, pick up one or more of these books and make this holidays memorable for your children.
