Keep kids safe around the pool this summer with these important tips.
As summer hits its peak, pools are at their busiest with kids of all ages keeping cool. Here’s how to keep your children safe at the same they’re having a blast, from proper supervision to physical protection.
In 1987, Life Saver Systems, a pool fence company, coined the phrase "layers of protection" to describe the most effective ways to prevent drownings. Almost 30 years later, mostly everyone (including the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance) recommends multiple layers of protection.
Here are five ways to keep your kids safe around the pool.
1. Parental Supervision
Proactive parental supervision is your most important tool in drowning prevention. This means sitting within arm’s reach or close to the pool with your full attention on the kids – no reading, no texting, just watching the pool. Most drownings occur when the child is thought to be in the house, nowhere near the pool. In 67 percent of fatal drowning cases, a parent was responsible for supervising the child.
At parties or events, designate someone as a Water Watcher (equipped with a lanyard and whistle), and change shifts every 15 minutes.
2. High Locks On All Doors And Windows
Install locks out of the reach of children on every door and window that leads to the pool area. Many drownings happen because a parent isn't aware that the child had figured out the doorknob, so don't rely on doors being shut. Remember to fasten any pet doors that access the pool.
3. Pool Safety Fence
Pool fencing is the only layer of protection that physically isolates the backyard from the pool. Fences should be at least 4' tall and have a self-closing, self-latching gate. A mesh pool safety fence, such as the Life Saver Pool Fence, is transparent and easy to remove when entertaining only adults.
4. Alarms
Drowning is silent. Alarms break that silence. Look for door and window alarms that sit in the pool. If your little one falls into the pool, an alarm inside that house goes off.
5. Swimming Lessons
All children should receive swimming lessons as early as their parents and pediatricians feel comfortable. Swimming lessons can begin earlier than you might think, with some organizations training even infants to roll over and float and to swim to the edge of the pool in the event that they fall in.
Parents should be trained in CPR in the event of an accident. Knowledge of CPR can make the difference between life, permanent disability and death.
When it comes to pool safety, there are a number of things you can do in order to keep your children safe. So go out and enjoy the nice weather, but always be cautious of where your kids are and how safe the environment is to prevent drowning from occurring.
