The much awaited song promo of "Pinga" from Bajirao Mastani has been released and Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone swing to reminiscent beats of Madhuri Dixit-Nene and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in "Dola Re" from Devdas.
This past Sunday saw the release of the much awaited and talked about song promo for "Pinga" from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming magnum opus Bajirao Mastani. "Pinga" is a full-on lavani number which is picturized on Kashibai played by Priyanka Chopra and Mastani essayed by Deepika Padukone who come together to celebrate through song and dance.
Chopra took to Twitter to celebrate her excitement over the newly released promo while shooting for her hit American TV series Quantico in Montreal, Quebec in Canada.

Both women sway to the beautifully choreographed steps of Remo D'Souza who has given the song a traditional feel while making it strikingly contemporary at the same time. In "Pinga," Chopra and Padukone proudly don the Marathi Mulgi avatar dressed and heavily adorned in navvari saris while they celebrate their love, pain and angst for their lover Bajirao, played by Ranveer Singh. Does this dramatization sound familar to you? We bet . . .

In fact, it was in 2002's Devdas, also directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, that we saw Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's character, Paro, and Chandramukhi, played by Madhuri Dixit-Nene, come together to celebrate Durga pooja with the now iconic dance number "Dola Re". Choreograped by the legendary Saroj Khan, the song centered around Paro and Chandramukhi coming together to celebrate and honour their love for Devdas played by Shahrukh Khan.
The fans and the media were abuzz with comparisons between both songs and actresses, which no doubt was expected. It's fair to say both may draw on similarities, but there is a uniqueness which differentiate them from one another at the same time.

While the similarities are bold and apparent, the allure that "Dola Re" had attached to it is missing from "Pinga". Dixit-Nene was a seasoned, experienced and trained Kathak dancer who was matching her steps to that of a new starlet in tinseltown in Bollywood, Rai Bachchan who was also a trained classical dancer. While the story in the film did not warrant it, "Dola Re" literally was a dance-off between two classical trained dancers, considered great at their craft. Also, the allure of seeing two generations of actresses coming together itself was something that was a spectacle to be seen on screen.
But "Pinga" while great, grand and beautiful in every single way is still missing that "allure." Maybe it's because Chopra and Padukone are actually pretty good friends in real life, so it's not hard to imagine them getting along in "reel life." It could also be attributed to the fact that we know Padukone and Singh have a thing going on behind the camera, so no matter how much these two girls dance, Padukone wins and takes the cake anyway.
But you be the judge and tell us what you think of "Pinga". . .
