Get the guide to quick fixes and useful tricks for dealing with common and often embarrassing beauty slip-ups below.
Dandruff
Here’s a trick to keep dandruff away, at least for a few days. When your hair is wet, massage a fair coating of baby oil into it using your fingertips (not your nails), note if you do this on dry hair you won’t be able to get the oil out afterwards.
Wear a shower cap and keep it on for at least three hours, overnight if you want even better results. Then wash your hair with shampoo. You may need to lather up a couple times to get rid of all the oil.
Oily or Cakey Foundation
There are two things I swear by to stop my face from looking shiny and cakey by the end of the day: a primer before applying any sort of face makeup and oil blotting sheets for mid-day touch-ups.
My go-to products are Smashbox Photo Finish Oil-Free Foundation Primer and Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets.
Fading Eye Shadow
Some people just naturally have softer or thinner skin on their lids, so shadow either doesn't stick or fades quickly, which defeats the purpose of wearing it in the first place.
If you don't have a lid primer, using a foundation underneath your eye shadow essentially does the same thing.
To make the colour pop even more, add a light layer of white shadow before your colour of choice.
Cold sores
As soon as you feel a cold sore coming (the area usually gets a little red and tingly before the sore actually surfaces), hold some ice on the area for five to ten minutes and continue icing it throughout the day. Your cold sore won’t stand a chance.
If it’s already broken through the surface, trying to cover up a cold sore with makeup will just make it worse. Instead, place a hot tea bag on the sore as it contains ingredients that are antiviral and antibacterial. Then cover it with vaseline to keep bacteria out.
Frizzy Hair
Rub a pea-sized amount of lotion between your hands and then glide them over your strands, steering clear of the roots.
I'm also in love with my new iso Professional Mini Light Tourmaline Straightener, which plugs into your car lighter for easy touch ups on the go.
Untamed Brows
If you don't have time for a grooming session, rock a bold lip to pull the attention away from your eyebrow area. Keep your eye makeup simple, mascara and a touch of liner on your bottom lash line is enough to pull it all together.
Biting off Lipstick
I'm definitely guilty of this bad habit. Avoid lipsticks with a matte finish and instead, apply a layer of gloss over top.
The coating on your lipstick makes it harder and less appealing to bite off. I like Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss.
Oily Hair
If you don’t have any dry shampoo on hand, try baby powder. Sprinkle some on the tip of wide brush, like a blush brush and dust it on your roots.
Use your finger to wipe down the white residue. It’s not a long-term fix but it removes the excess oil long enough for you to make it work.
Sweaty Pits
I haven’t found any other product that works as well as Drysol Extra Strong Anti-Perspirant. It’s pretty potent though, so it can tear through light fabrics. For the best results, apply it the night before.
You only need to use it a couple times a week and in between, you can use your normal deodorant or anti-perspirant.
For a more natural alternative, dabbing apple cider vinegar or even lemon juice can help balance your skin’s pH to minimize perspiration and odour.
