Popping hues, flowers, theatrical style, Star Wars and more!
2014 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week seemed to get off to a bumpy start, with the fashion politics that sent notables like Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors running their shows downtown at Lincoln Center. Alexander Wang also showcased his work as far as in Brooklyn. Editors and assistants were in a frenzy trying to get to shows that took place all over the city, but their diligence through sleet and snow paid off and New York Fashion Week closed with overwhelming success.

In the last couple years NYFW has stepped away from private exclusivity, welcoming star-studded rooms full of fashionable celebs like Hugh Jackman, Solange Knowles, Padma Lakshmi, Katie Holmes and more. Celebs stayed true to the spirit of the week with gents like David Beckham (supporting his wife) who kept it sharp, and ladies dressed to the nines like Freida Pinto and Blake Lively, who competed with the models at the Michael Kors show with their own fashionable floral prints.

"Fashion Week has become this massive, massive thing, and it's outgrown its traditional boundaries," Eric Wilson, fashion news director at InStyle magazine, was quoted as saying. "It's a question of how it's going to manage its growth at this point."

One major highlight of the week was the Heart Truth Red Dress runway show (just in time for Valentine’s Day), where designers like Marchesa, Dolce & Gabbana, Zac Posen and others dressed celebrities – Giada de Laurentis, Gina Torres, and Joan Jett just to name a few – to campaign against heart disease in women.

Another notable event was the DVF 40th Anniversary celebration of the wrap dress, with a musical performance by St. Vincent; this year’s style was heavily influenced, as the lady herself put it, by “Bohemian Rhapsody” crossed with the “Ballet Russes.”
Naeem Khan’s cabaret-inspired collection also spoke of the theatre, but with characteristically individual showmanship, as his gowns stood out brilliantly in a bold animal prints, flowing silks, beadwork, sequins and creative geometric patterns that combined boudoir couture with Hollywood glamour. He hopes to expand his collections more this year.

Bibhu Mohapatra chose the sunsets of Tibet as the primary source of inspiration. As as result, we are inundated with beautiful gradients through the courtesy of digital prints and metallics.
Nanette Lepore showed her eclectic South-Asian inspired work to be a mishmash of beaded purses, tiger adorned shoes and Bohemian well-travelled signature looks. She emphasizes fashion production made in New York rather than overseas. “It’s the idea of handwork and weavings and all that, but from no specific place,” she explains. “Just all of my favorite things, brought back to New York City to be handcrafted in New York.”
That might not be the case for every designer, but New York Fashion Week is most definitely bigger than ever before in every way.
