Bollywood Screen Siren Nargis Fakhri Takes Her South Asian Roots to the West to Join the Increasing South Asian Presence In American Entertainment.
It's always a joy when one of our own makes it into the mainstream realm — and such is the case with yet another Bollywood starlet. Actress Nargis Fakhri will be making her Hollywood debut in a film called Spy. The film releases in the United States on June 5, 2015, and sees its release in India on June 19, 2015.
Spy is directed by acclaimed director Paul Feig, who's best known for his comedic direction of the popularly successful film The Heat and the now cult-loved film Bridesmaids. Nargis' association with Spy was rumoured earlier, but with the release of the film's most recent poster, it's certain that the sexy screen siren will be showing some Bollywood moves in this upcoming summer comedy flick as part of the headlining cast. Spy also stars Hollywood heavyweights Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and Jude Law.
In Spy, Nargis plays a special agent. She performs full-fledged action sequences without using a body double — which is pretty impressive. It will be interesting to see how well the actress can mesh with the Hollywood film industry, as she has received minor roles and only a few opportunities to showcase her talent in Indian cinema.
Now, for readers unfamiliar with Bollywood terrain, this news may come as a surprise, but Nargis's entrance into Hollywood comes at the cusp of a growing Bollywood presence in Western entertainment — which is seeing a lot more South Asian representation lately. Bollywood actress and singer Priyanka Chopra recently joined the ABC network family, playing a lead character in the upcoming fall 2015 primetime series Quantico as an FBI recruit.
Of course, there have been many other Bollywood actors occupying roles in major mainstream projects. Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur, who rose to fame with The Lunchbox in 2013, bagged a central role as a Pakistani intelligence officer in the American TV series Homeland, starring Claire Danes. Rahul Khanna also returned to the primetime thriller The Americans in a recurring role as Yousaf, another Pakistani intelligence officer.
Why is everyone playing cops, holding guns and playing Pakistani police officials? Clearly there is a trend here that I don't understand, or perhaps there is just one writer at the helm of all of these scripts determined to make South Asians known while suffering from a lack of creativity. Who knows? Anyway, it's a great time to be South Asian in the mainstream!
It will be interesting to see how South Asians continue to make their presence felt in the mainstream world, especially if they continue to get the substantive roles that they certainly aren't receiving in Bollywood cinema.
