Movie Review: Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Salman Khan's Eid 2015 release Bajrangi Bhaijaan was already making noise, pre-release, with its fantastic music composed by Pritam, including “Selfie Le Le Re,” the song everyone is dancing to. On opening day the film raked in a whopping RS 27.25 crore in India alone and crossed the 100 crore club ($20 million CDN) during its opening weekend, making this the biggest three-day opening for a Bollywood film. Now entering its seventh day, it’s poised to close the 200 crore mark ($40 million CDN) in India alone. In the UAE the film hit the 10 crore ($200,000 CDN) mark in just one day.
The film is based on an aimless man, Pawan, also known as Bajrangi (Salman Khan), who is trying to find his purpose in life so that the father of his love, Rasika (Kareena Kapoor Khan), will allow them to marry. His calling comes in the form of a six-year-old mute Muslim girl, Shahida, also known as Munni (Harshaali Malhotra), who has been separated from her parents and finds herself lost in an unknown country. Pawan makes it his mission to reunite young Munni with her parents, even if this means crossing the border into Pakistan, her home country, with nothing but his belief in God.
The bond between Bajrangi and Munni grows through the film and Bajrangi Bhaijaan shows Salman Khan in a totally different light, far from his machismo lover avatar.
Although Khan has had his fair share of love stories in films like Dabangg, Kick and Ek Tha Tiger, they’re nothing compared to the love and compassion we see between him and Harshaali.
Director Kabir Khan (Kabul Express, New York, Ek Tha Tiger) captures the audience within the first few minutes of this film that shows us the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan and the struggles a human being faces just for being on the wrong side of the border.
Khan has made this film one of Salman Khan’s best films and he has done so cleverly by holding back on Salman himself and allowing some of the other characters to take the spotlight.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan can definitely be enjoyed by the entire family, just be prepared for laughter and tears.
