Modern Twist On Traditional Indian Bridal Wear

With all eyes on her, it’s no secret that a bride wants to look her very best on her wedding day. Whether it’s a simple and elegant bridal salwar kameez or a fabulously outrageous lengha, there are so many choices that make the wardrobe selection process limitless—the sky’s the limit!

One aspect in which today’s brides are experimenting is the use of color in their bridal wardrobe. Traditionally, brides would turn to red as their wedding color choice as it holds a sacred place in South Asian culture.

Red not only signifies love and passion, but is associated with good luck and prosperity. Interestingly enough, the planet that rules over marriage in astrology is Mars, which is also red in color. However, as brides have a plethora of options to use red in their wedding ceremony (i.e. Sindoor, Mehndi, Wedding Day Bangles, etc.), more and more brides are using their outfits as a way to express their unique and original taste.

Red is a gorgeous color, but your wardrobe may be a space for you to do something daringly different on your own wedding day.

Pretty in Pink

Who can’t resist falling in love with the blushing bride in pink?

A versatile shade that signifies elegance and youth, it can look amazing in the Spring in light shades of blush, baby pink while in the Fall, deeper shades of fuschia and dark pink look sublime with the changing colours of the season.

Glitter in Gold

Who doesn’t love a little bling?

Evoking feelings of prestige and wealth, this is a color that needs little else to make it truly shine. It’s also incredibly easy to wear as long as you use a neutral-toned base and then have the embroidery provide the sparkle.

Keep jewelry simple or go fabulously Bollywood like Aishwarya Rai did on her wedding in a gold and pale orange bridal sari.

Purple Passion

Purple is considered the color of Royalty amongst the Greeks and that notion has carried through to the brides of today.

I love how this bride wears purple as her main focus but keeps traditional red accents throughout her Bridal Anarkali. Don’t hesitate to do the same, you can line your bridal wear with red trim or keep it as simple as choosing a red-coloured dupatta.

Beautiful Blues

A gorgeously unique color, blue is not only stunning, but also soothing to the eyes.

This bride complimented the ocean backdrop of her cruise wedding with a stunning blue lengha — her groom was right behind her in an equally dashing sherwani with blue accents.

Opulently Orange

Orange is one of the most flattering colours on South Asian skin tone; the green and olive undertones that are natural to so many South Asian brides are complimented perfectly by virtually any shade of orange, making brides literally glow when wearing this hue.

I love how this bride deepens the rich orange of her brocade bridal lengha skirt by adding a sheer net red-orange dupatta and matching choli top. The touch of red adds a pop of tradition while adding a dynamic richness to the entire outfit.
