Everything you need to know about buying and maintaining makeup brushes.
Who doesn’t want flawless skin, glowing cheeks and eyes that really pop? Having flawless makeup isn't only about picking the right products, it's also about the tools you use to achieve the look.
Makeup brushes make all the difference when it comes to getting a more professional-looking makeup application. These tips will help you pick out the best brushes and teach you how to care for them properly so they last.
Foundation Brush
Designed to achieve a smooth and flawless finish, the bristles are tightly packed with a tapered tip for fluid application. A foundation brush with a blend of natural and synthetic bristles will get you a much more organic-looking finish. Wash this brush weekly.

Concealer Brush
A soft bristled, flat brush with a wider base and a pointed tip. The brush should be small and stiff which will allow you to dab and blend makeup exactly where you need it. Synthetic bristles are idea, so they don’t soak up makeup and give you more precision. Wash this brush weekly.

Powder Brush
Choose a powder brush with a medium size and slightly round head; this will let you dust powder only where you need it. This brush can be used for both compact powder and bronzer. The tips of the bristles should feel feathery, the bottoms should be clenched together, and none should shed onto skin. Wash this brush weekly.

Shadow Brush
This brush is used for applying shadow to your lids; it should be short, soft, very densely packed bristles and feel soft and silky. Shadow brushes don’t need to be washed as often, but washing them biweekly should keep them performing at their peak.

Brow Brush
Look for a brush that has a brow brush on one side and on the other a spooley brush (one similar to a mascara wand). It is one of the best tools for making brows look groomed. This brush should be washed at least once a month.
Lip Brush
Choose a lip brush with fine bristles and a straight edge. If you wear lip liner, choose a small lip brush with a pointed tip. While you may not usually like a lip brush, it's great for getting the last part of the lipstick out of the tube. Clean this brush monthly.

Cleaning Your Brushes
You don’t want to spend money on brushes just to ruin them after a few uses. Washing them keeps them working in top shape so you can get your money’s worth. Skipping this step can also lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Here's how to clean them:
1. Rinse in lukewarm water to remove the residual makeup.
2. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and a squirt of gentle shampoo or baby shampoo. Swirl the tip of the brush in the water to work up a lather.
3. Rinse the brush tip under the water again and repeat the second and third steps until the water runs clean.
4. Use a cloth to wipe the brushes clean and lay them flat to dry.
