Don’t let the heat ruin your look. Here’s what you can do to make sure you look your best no matter how high the temperatures rise this summer.
Imagine you’re out enjoying a hot summer afternoon, or you’re hitting the dance floor and the crowd is growing around you—it’s only getting hotter and stickier. It happens to the best of us: you spend hours getting ready, only for it to be ruined by the heat before you even have the chance to really get noticed. Instead of learning the hard way, keep this set of tricks on hand so you’ll be well equipped to handle any beauty blunder that strikes while you’re out trying to look your best this summer.
Beat the Poof
A lot of South Asian women have thick, coarse hair. If you’re trying to go for the sleek, straight hair look, nothing ruins your style more than unexpected frizz. And even the most expensive hair straightener is no match for hot and sticky air, which can turn your sleek strands into a big poofy mess.
After using your straightening tools, go over your hair with your blow dryer on the cool setting. Then rub a couple drops of lotion between your palms and smooth it over the lengths of your hair, starting at mid-shaft and working your way down through to the ends. The cool air and lotion will help set your straight style and keep it in place throughout the night.
Stop the Stink
While you’re working up a sweat in the summer heat, or dancing up a storm (as you should be), you may fall victim to another unfortunate side effect of heat—body odour. Deodorant is, of course, a must, but there are a couple other things you can do to keep you smelling fresh.
Perfumes work but not if you bathe in them—you just have to know where to spray. For a lasting effect, add a spritz to pulse points, like the inside of your wrists, the base of your neck and behind your ears. There a few other spots you may not have thought of, like behind your knees and your inner elbow. Fragrances also last longer when you apply them on moisturized skin. Try adding a light layer of petroleum jelly on the area of skin you’re spraying—the scent will stick better.
What you eat can have a lot to do with how you smell because certain foods can emanate through your skin when you sweat. If you know you’re going to be out and about in the heat, avoid eating foods that contain a lot of garlic, cumin, asparagus and red meat. Unfortunately that rules out a lot of Indian dishes, but it can make all the difference. Drinking lots of water can also help because it flushes toxins out of your system.
Makeup Mishaps
When you sweat, your makeup can end up looking sloppy, which is incredibly annoying when you spent so much time perfecting it. One of the first things to make an early exit is eye makeup. To stop your shadow from fading, use an oil-free foundation followed by a light layer of face powder as a base on your lids. Then try and find a cream shadow that’s the same hue as the shadow you want to use. Combining the cream and powder formula will add extra hold.
Lipstick can also give way by feathering beyond your natural lip line. Keep the colour in place by dabbing foundation on the skin around your lips. This fills in the tiny creases where lipstick would bleed. Use a neutral or clear lip liner (it works with every shade) before applying the colour. Some women are naturally more prone to bleeding lipstick. If you’re one of them, opt for lipsticks with a matte finish instead of glossy.
