Summer is here and lots of people are jetting off on vacation. Learn how to pack your beauty products like a pro!
I recently went away for a weekend with the girls and I faced a problem that I’m sure a lot of you can relate to: I had a lot to take and not a very big suitcase to fit it all in. As if packing clothes wasn’t hard enough, I also had to figure out how to pack my slew of creams, hair products, shower tools, and makeup. Needless to say it was a struggle—so I decided it was time to get creative.
If you’re going on a short getaway, you obviously can’t take everything, but you’d be surprised at how much you can fit if you do it strategically. So, the next time you’re packing for a trip, keep these tips handy—they’re guaranteed to make your life just a little bit easier.
Coordinate
If you’re going with a group of girls, why not share the products you’re all going to bring anyways? For example, you’re all going to wash your hair at some point and use body wash. Arrange between all of you and split the baggage—instead of all of you lugging one of everything, one person can bring the shampoo, one person can bring the soap, one person can bring a body lotion, and so on.
Think long-term
If you’re going for a longer trip (more than week), consider buying your basic beauty essentials at your destination. Of course it depends on where you’re going—it might be harder to find your favourite shampoo in the middle of Mexico—but if you’re going to be in the city, you can find most beauty products you’ll need for your stay. For stuff you probably won’t be using everyday (like shampoo), buy smaller sizes so that you don’t have to worry about taking them back with you. Just use and toss, and you won’t even have to worry about packing them for the trip home.
Multipurpose makeup
There are a lot of cosmetic products that are designed to do double duty, which would cut down on how much you need to cram in your makeup bag—a smaller makeup bag leaves room for other things in your suitcase. My favorite product for travelling is The Multiple by Nars, a multi-purpose stick that you can use on your cheeks, lips, and eyes.
Follow the rules
If you’re flying to your destination and are only planning to take a carry-on bag, you are unfortunately restricted by guidelines pertaining to liquids and aerosols. According to the rules set out by the Transportation Security Administration, your liquid, gel and spray containers can’t exceed 100 ml and they have to all fit into one standard-sized Ziploc bag. Instead of spending money on travel-size products, go to your local dollar store and pick up empty bottles that you can fill with yourself. Since the containers are refillable, you can still use your favourite products, plus you can save them for the next time you’re taking off. Just remember to label the bottles so that you know what each one is.
Save space
Think of every possible space that you can fill when packing and layer up. For example, put your perfume bottle inside your shoe—it saves space and protects the bottle from breaking. For other fragile items, stick them between layers of clothes, but just remember where you put it so that you don’t have to waste time searching for it when you need it.
Prevent leaks
To make sure your products don’t spring a leak while in motion, add a layer of tape around the lids and put them each in their own plastic bag for safe measure.
Here are some other great travel accessories I’ve come across:
- T3 Featherweight Journey Folding, World Voltage, Travel Hair Dryer
- Conair MiniPRO ¾” Ceramic Steam Straightener
- Batiste Dry Shampoo
- Simple Exfoliating Facial Wipes
