Rebuilding Your Life After A Breakup
For many breakups can be a difficult time, usually, breakups lead to anger, resentment and depression. During this tough time a person can react impulsively, ruining any potential chance to recover the relationship if it does indeed have a future. Not all breakups are permanent, but necessary for the couple if they choose to make it more about a time apart, allowing for reflection and some soul-searching. In other words, it is not the end of the world, and can result into something better.
Here are some recommended tips to aid in your journey toward positivity and healing:
Do Not Stay Friends
Trying to remain friends after a breakup may not be the best decision when you're trying to regain yourself, and moving on will be no easy feat. Anna Breslaw of Cosmopolitan suggests, “Don't immediately suggest to ‘stay friends’ — and if he does, tell him you need to think about it. This is an impulse because you don't want to seem like you care too much about the breakup.” She goes on to say, “You're not admitting defeat by not staying friends with him.”
The Blame Game Does Not Always Work
Playing the blame game during a breakup will only make the relationship more difficult, generate negative energy, and hinder the healing process. Rachel Sussman, author of Breakup Bible, tells Women’s Health Magazine, “In order to really recover from a breakup in a healthy way, you have to understand what part you played in it, even if it was a small part.” In other words, a relationship consists of two people, and both are equally responsible for the breakup.
Take A Break From Relationships
If you have been in a long-term relationship, a breakup will definitely be a challenge, especially if you have a mutual group of friends, who may be compelled to make a choice between you and your ex. At this time, take the opportunity to reflect, regroup and rethink about your relationship, allowing you to heal and recover. Taking time to remain single for some time (even a month or two) will force you to recognize and reflect on the decisions you made before jumping into another relationship. In Help Guide, authors Jeanne Segal, Gina Kemp, and Melinda Smith say, “You may not be able to be quite as productive on the job or care for others in exactly the way you’re accustomed to for a little while. No one is superman or superwoman; take time to heal, regroup, and re-energize.”
