How Are South Asians Being Linked To The World Of Comic Books?
Comic book Flintlock features one of the first regular South Asian comic characters ever — and her name is Shanti, the Pirate Queen.
Time Bomb Comics is the brainchild of Steve Tanner, the editor, publisher and owner of the comic company. He's created a character that will find great appreciation among the global South Asian community.
A South Asian character that's not a stereotypical taxi driver, nerd or computer scientist, Shanti, the Pirate Queen, appears in his latest comic series, Flintlock.

Set in the 18th century, Flintlock is an adventure story with a historical backdrop taking place in a 100-year timeframe. All the characters are intertwined with shared timelines, universes and actions.

So what can we expect from Shanti, the Pirate Queen?
She's independent. She's ruthless. She's an anti-hero. She's South Asian. That's enough to peak our curiosity, right? But according to Tanner, Shanti's ethnic and cultural background is quite significant.
"I wanted to have characters you wouldn’t normally see. I’m a white hetero male and they are the majority and over the years that I’ve been working in comics this has been niggling at me," says Tanner to DESIblitz.

“There weren’t many major strong female characters in comics; most are over sexualised without much depth. Female superheroes are pretty much male super heroes but drawn as females; there aren’t many narrative differences. In the western culture there aren’t many South Asian characters. Before Kamala Khan as Captain Marvel, it was a blonde white woman; there was no representation of that kind of character."
