Hot Spot! Tobermory
Plan your summer road trip by discovering this jewel of a spot!
It's officially summer and one of the best escapes to meditative peace and exhilarating adventures is no far than a drive to the northern Ontario.
The small village of Tobermory is at the Tip of Bruce Peninsula. It is the 'Canada's Scuba Diving Capital'. Originally named as Collins Harbor, Tobermory was renamed by the Scottish fisherman in 1850's. It's a pleasing four and a half hour drive from downtown Toronto – a drive that winds through lush green fields and farms.
It's a diver's delight and photographer's paradise. The land contains the charm of an old world fishing village and offers hiking, kayaking, star gazing, golfing with the absolute breathtaking scenery. Some of Canada's finest art and artisan work can be found here.
Take a leisurely walk by around the Little Tub Harbor or soak in the beautiful sunset by The Lighthouse. Star gazing at Georgian Bay under the perfect night sky, you may catch a glimpse of the Milky Way or the Northern Lights.
The Flowerpot Island
The bubbling sound of water and the expanse of Georgian Bay will be an indulgence you will never forget. The Big Tub Harbor on the east is the deepest natural harbor on The Great Lakes. It holds two ship wrecks which are a must-see with the various Glass Bottom cruises open to tourists.
The clean, fresh waters were once taken over by schooners and steamers making their way through the maze of islands and reef off shores. Today, Fathom Five National Marine Park is the final resting place of some two-dozen wrecks and twenty islands.
One of the most famous Islands is the Flowerpot Island which has two sea stacks on the east side created by wave and ice erosion. It looks like huge flowerpots and hence the name. If you are a nature's pet, tent into one of the six tenting sites are available on the Island.
Tobermory offers affordable and modern accommodations and has one of the best of dining places in Ontario. The local white fish, Bruce County beef prime rib, nut brittles and fantastic fudge is a visitor's delight.

Enjoy a special adventure – hike at the world-famous 700-kilometre Bruce Trail the magnificent Niagara Escarpment at the Bruce Peninsula National Park. It's a feast for the eyes and the camera lenses. The Grotto at the Cyprus Lake is an awe-inspiring natural underwater cave into Georgian Bay.

And who doesn't like to have a little picnic at the beach? On the west shore at the Dorcas Bay is the Singing Sands Beach with extensive sand flats where you can walk out for hundreds of meters. And for all those flower lovers out there, it is one of the best places to spot wide varieties of orchids.

Fun Fact! In April 1912, the wireless station that replaced the old telegraph line connecting Tobermory to the outside world picked up the far distant distress calls of a sinking ship. It was the Titanic.
