Holidays Are A Time Of Rejoicing, Cheers, And Delicious Libations — So Here Are Some Cures To Keep You Going Throughout The Festivities
Hangovers can mean a pounding head, a feeling of uneasiness, and nausea in the morning, which aren't great feelings — especially after a night of partying and holiday fun. While it's easier to drink in moderation or pace yourself, your body can only handle so much after a night of overindulgence. There are many traditional remedies, like sweating it off with exercise, trying some hair of the dog or taking medication to ease into the next day. But sometimes these cures can only help a little with a nasty hangover — or even make you feel worse.
Here are some tips to have an enjoyable morning after a holiday party.
Sleep it off
If you're lucky and have no morning engagements, you should catch some extra sleep to get over your hangover. Jocelyn Voo of Fitness Magazine says, “Alcohol is metabolized at the rate of .015 of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), or roughly one drink every hour, meaning those extra brews can quickly add up. And just like a broken heart, time can heal all and sleeping through your body metabolizing last night's happy hour will make you feel better. Just make sure to keep hydrated once your peepers finally open.” Sleep will make it all better. You can also buy a sleeping blindfold to ensure you don’t get up with the sun.
Keep on snacking
Drinking on an empty stomach is a big no-no. Eating fatty foods before drinking usually allows the stomach to absorb more alcohol. You need not always succumb to an unhealthy diet when you drink. But by eating, you will dilute the effects of your delicious libation. Eating will prevent a nasty hangover in the morning, but be sure to pace yourself well when you eat and drink. You don’t want to have an upset stomach the following day. Stephanie Brooks, MS, RD, a nutrition consultant in San Francisco, tells WebMD, “Food provides electrolytes that replenish the body after dehydration. This is especially important for someone who's vomited within the last 24 hours.” She suggests drinking a smoothie or sport drinks to help ease the pain.
Alka-Seltzer
Alka-Seltzer is the famous fizzy medicine that's been used to provide morning relief for hangovers for a long time. All Alka-Seltzer varieties (sometimes also known as Eno) contain sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda), which helps settle an upset stomach by neutralizing stomach acid. But its other ingredients, like aspirin and citric acid, might not fully cure your stomach after a night of heavy drinking.
