Highlights From ANOKHI’s 11th Anniversary Event

Here's the wrap up of last nights #ANOKHI11 celebrations: ANOKHI Magazine's 11th Annual Anniversary Gala!

Notable figures and celebrities such as Sangita Patel, Raoul Juneja, Jimmy Soni, Abbas Hasan, Sakina Jaffrey, Culture Shock, Shantanu & Nikhil were all recognized for their work last night as part of ANOKHI Magazine's 'The ANOKHI List', featured in the 11th Anniversary Collector's Edition. The big buzz of the night was of course Shantanu & Nikhil's first Canadian fashion showcase.

The first performance of the night, Meher Pavri.

Meher Pavri stole our heart with her angelic voice.

Priya sizzled on the stage in a sexy number – 'Aaja Habib' while Abbas melted the hearts of many a lady in the audience with his songs 'Sona & Habibi' and cute looks.

President & CEO of ANOKHI MEDIA, Raj Girn and the ANOKHI Magazine's Editor-In-Chief, Hina Ansari took charge on the stage discussing the evolving world of ANOKHI MEDIA. From the revamped Pulse TV and online blogs with 20 plus categories to the new ANOKHI Daily Spotlight TV.

To begin the official award ceremony co-host of CBC News Toronto Anne Marrie Mediwake presented the awards in the media category starting with former-engineer turned journalist Sangita Patel, honoured as the 2014 'Media Personality of the Year'.

Following Patel's acceptance speech, the awards kept on coming with Raoul Juneja being honoured for 'Excellence in Music Media' and Huffington Post Managing Editor Jimmy Soni receiving 'Excellence in Online Media'. Soni, looking dapper in a well-fitted tux and a mega-smile said "When I first found out about this, I did what any good Indian boy does and I called my mother." The 27-year-old then told the audience how his mother has kept him humble throughout his explosive career.

Comedian Ali Hassan has the audience in stitches, demonstrating how, despite his Indian heritage, he is unable to sit cross-legged.

After getting the crowd livened up, Hassan presented the next award.

"I’m honoured to be presenting a brand new comedy category of The ANOKHI Awards this evening, the 'Comedy Personality of the Year Award', with one mega personality being honoured this year," he said. "She’s someone who rose from obscurity to global stardom with her very own YouTube video channel. Yes you’ve guessed it; her name is Superwoman!"

“A lot of people don’t take me very seriously but to be here and to receive this award is really validating,” said the Superwoman with over 2 million You Tube subscriber. We do love you Lilly Singh!

ATN's host, Amin Dhillon presented the music awards for the evening.

DJ Fizza received the award for 'Most Promising Deejay Of the Year'! Here is what she had to say, “It’s always been a dream of mine to Deejay at an ANOKHI event and here I am standing here and receiving an award."

Musical artist Priya took home the award for 'Musical Artist of The Year.' “When I first got the call, I was just bewildered and I’m still shocked”

R&B's hottest male artist Abbas Hasan, is awarded the 'Musical Artist Of the Year Award'. "Its been a great year working with Elton John and I am thankful to my team Abbas.

The fourth and final award honouree in the music category was world renowned fusion music band Culture Shock.

Awardee and host of the film category, Sangita Patel joked on stage that anything is possible, she made references to perhaps being a mayor one day.

Gabe Grey took home the award for 'The Most Promising Actor of the Year'. "South Asians are doing things that are ANOKHI and Raj, you have always recognized them."

The award for 'Best Actor of the Year' went to Nazneen Contractor. "The dress looked better on a hanger and its just so difficult to walk into it," Nazneen we love it more on you. The gorgeous actor thanked her family and dedicated the award to her late father.

House of Cards actress Sakina Jaffrey took home the award for 'Excellence in Performing Arts'.

In her acceptance speech she admitted "I always felt like an imposter Indian, although my parents are renowned Indians, how about a kid who was never good in math and science. But after playing the Indian wife and mom I know you are good in math. Thanks you guys!"

Host of OMNI Television’s Bollywood Blvd, Veronica Chail presented the 'Excellence in Fashion Design Award' to International Designer Duo Shantanu & Nikhil.

"It took 12 years for people to give us an award. And we traveled 16 hours to get it," says Nikhil, laughing. Receiving accolades for their work came easily for the designers, but adjusting to the cold Canadian winter did not. "I have my thermals on now and I feel like the Tandoori Chicken."

But Shantanu added that despite the weather, receiving this award meant a lot to the fashion duo. "Opportunities like this give us the recognition that we have arrived," he says.

And their show did more than just put them on the map. After showcasing their bridal ready-to-wear collection, they received a well-deserved standing ovation.

Culture Shock fusion band wrapped up the show with premiering their brand new number 'RAISE YOUR HANDS'- an electric performance that set the stage for a kicking after party.
