HD Homme F/W 2015 Collection Adds The Urban Man To His High-End Luxury Mix
Toronto Men's Fashion Week (TOMFW) stormed into the City of Toronto for the second year in a row with a fresh new set of trends for the Fall/Winter 2015 season. Variations in texture and pattern ruled the runway, and among the stylish chaos was fashion designer Hussein Dhalla of HD HOMME. Known for his classy take on men’s fashion, this F/W 2015 collection by the designer did not disappoint boasting style, glamour and personality (three essentials every man must have in his wardrobe). Keeping true to his colour palette of black, he made this collection a broader take on the male wardrobe made interesting by the mix of textures fused together, a true collection for the modern, refined man.
I chatted with the designer fresh off the coattails of his successful runway showcase to chat about his new collection, the must-have pieces and that beautiful calf-fur showstopper.
DANIEL PILLAI: Many criticize men's fashion for its lack of creativity, but your recent collection really kicks that to the curb with its vibrant, eye-catching pieces. What are your thoughts about this as a fashion designer?
HUSSEIN DHALLA: I would say that, traditionally speaking, men have stayed in the classic black tuxedo safe zone. The 87th Oscars was a prime example of this. Men don’t tend to play with colour nor texture and for me, as you saw with my recent FW15 collection, I have stayed true to my taste with the colours but I’ve set new bounds with my choice of textiles.

DP: What was the inspiration with your F/W 2015 collection? What inspired the creative process of this specific collection from its inception to the pieces being featured on the runway?
HD: I wanted to incorporate an urban casual flare to my collection, still keeping it very high-end luxury but ensuring that not every look that came out on the runway was the typical blazer jacket and tuxedo pant combination, which I have produced in the past. This season, I incorporated a new type of pant. It’s a jogger–dress pant combo. I also incorporated calf fur in a few of my pieces.

DP: Describe some of the highlight pieces in your Fall/Winter collection and what makes them so unique.
HD: I created a fur cashmere robe, calf fur trench, blazer and bomber jacket. I would consider these my highlighted pieces, as it’s the first time I’ve worked with this textile.
Not to mention that every piece of footwear that was on the runway this season is HD Homme! We have now launched our shoe line, which ranges from patent leather dress shoes and boots to high-quality leather loafers and high tops.
DP: Who is the HD Homme man that you design your pieces for? What are his likes and dislikes? What are his attributes? What is his lifestyle?
HD: HD Homme as a brand has been created for a classy gentleman. A man who has worked hard and has built himself to a point where he can enjoy the finer things in life. He is meant to be the epitome of class and etiquette.
DP: How and why is your recent collection a representation of the new, modern man?
HD: I call him the modern-day gentleman as, in today's world, you have to roll with the times and embrace the new with the old and still make it your own.
